I just finished a match where only one enemy and I were left, and I was very confident that I would win the duel one on one.
So, instead of destroying him through the CT, I instead took off his leg, then his arms, then the final leg. I thought this yielded the highest score (...?)
However, a team mate told me I would have been better to simply core him, as then I'd earn more salvage (...?)
Can anyone clarify for me what is the optimal way to win in terms of earning maximum CBills. Is it to destroy them component by component, or is it to core them with as little component damage as possible?
Thanks for your advice.
Note: I wouldn't usually take this approach during a match with multiple enemies. I realise that killing enemies as quickly as possible is what the team needs me to do.

Destroying Components, Vs Winning Salvage?

I don't know about c-bills, but picking him apart like that is better for XP (more damage and component destruction points). But it's also kinda' risky if they have any usable guns left.

Hmmm... not sure tbh. I think cbills for salvage is way more than just pure damage/component destruction money, so if you want cbills I think it's better to kill them with as little damage as possible to maximize salvage.
As for XP, you'll get more from destroying them with as much component destructions as possible just as Escef said. So I guess it depends if you're after cbills or XP :-)

Since the CBill nerf, component destruction is worth a *lot* more than salvage is. Picking mechs apart is now the correct choice.

Our team went through and killed 11/12 enemy mechs by leg only kills in 2 of 3 matches. This yielded "almost" 20k more salvage than any other normal matches (cbills). I think cockpit kills pay the best though. But like the other said, he may have been talking about xp.

For pure cbills you need the salvage to actually be intact. So a cockpit gives the most reward, followed by legging. ST kills with XL engines would be next.
However, you also run into the Me vs Team choice. You get a Cbill reward for component destruction. It only goes to you though. Salvage goes to everybody.
If you are playing in a team, your best bet for maximum rewards is salvage as it = salvage x team members. If playing solo PUG and you don't care about the rest of your team, pick them apart for maximum personal gain.
I personally always try to go for salvage myself for biggest team rewards.
