It should be invisible to normal light anyway. In different vision modes we should be able to detect it.

Garth has said for a while now that he wants TAG to only be visible in night vision mode.

I was about to post that I think it'd be neat that if TAG worked similarly to the PEQ-2A or PEQ-15, where you only can see it designating targets in the IR spectrum.

As for the obscuring atmosphere making the beam visible, isn't there a lot of smoke from the battle going on? Missile exhausts, autocannons firing and ejecting shells, 'mechs burning on the ground, and so on?

I wouldn't think it implausible that a laser would be visible under those conditions.

Either way, everyone knows lasers are visible because of the Rule of Cool (warning: TvTropes link. The management disavows any responsibility for hours lost).
