Hmmm, I dunno. I immediately think of things like the F-117 Nighthawk Fighter, the B-2 Spirit Bomber, ninjas, SWAT teams, those wacky IRS agents...I get the impression they could be onto something. :P

On the ground though, black is rare. There might be something to painting the bottom of aircraft black to match the sky, but ninjas, swat teams, and IRS agents wear black to intimidate (especially IRS agents <shudder />).

When I played paintball, the "ninjas" always stood out as being the black bloob surrounded by green and brown.

Even in shadows or at night, 'black' is simply a shadow applied to another color.

I find the best "camo" in the game is to keep your mech the stock "noob green" colors. :P

It has been my experience that the enemy tends to go after the more colorful mechs first on the assumption that those mechs are piloted by more experienced players who have invested money in the game and are likely to be more of a threat then those "noob green" mechs out on the battlefield.

They say the best don't advertise.

I doubt camo is useful and I personally go for bright, fun colors, but I thought this might be a useful exercise:

Look at your map stats for an idea of what maps there are and how often they show up in rotation:

http://mwomercs.com/.../stats?type=map

Tourmaline Desert and Canyon Network pop up the most frequently because they have no snow/night variations. The idea is that they show up as often as some version of any other map.

They may have put Terra Therma in the same category as Tourmaline/Canyon; it certainly seems that way.

Caustic Valley and Alpine Peaks have only one version each, but for whatever reason, they are in the same category as the rarer maps that have two variations.

Camo doesn't make the slightest difference if people have night or thermal vision on.

Common:
Tourmaline Desert
Canyon Network
Terra Therma

Uncommon:
Caustic Valley
Alpine Peaks
Forest Colony
Forest Colony Snow
River City
River City Night
Frozen City
Frozen City Night

Maps with substantial white:
Tourmaline Desert
Alpine Peaks
Forest Colony Snow
Frozen City

Maps with substantial dark brown:
Terra Therma
Forest Colony
Forest Colony Snow
River City

Maps with substantial mid-grays:
Forest Colony
River City

Canyon Network and Caustic Valley are all alone in their color schemes. You could say Tourmaline has a lot of dark brown, but usually the ground is your backdrop, not the rocks.

Once you can select which map you take a specific mech to, Camo might be worth more in terms of functionality.

For pure aesthetic purposes though, my favourite by far is the woodlands Camo.

I use a variety of greens on mine, and I tend to blend in with forest colony and caustic. To a lesser extent tourmaline, river city and Terra Therma.

I worked out once that it would cost me about 3500 odd MC to put all my mechs into a single use Woodlands Camo. It's a testament to how good the woodlands Camo is that I seriously considered it for about 5 minutes :)

Fun fact, all camo is pointless if someone looks at you with absolute minimum settings.
