Highlander 733C is the next best hands down, as it can support more missile hardpoints, allowing for it to make really good Gauss+PPC / Emergency Brawler builds.
Those are really the two best easily.

+1 this... spot on... 732 with 2ppc and guass and 3 srm6 and JJ's very deadly combo... streaks at 2.5 dmg an option also..

The 733 used to be decent for missile lovers, but thanks to some currently unresolved bugs with the 2nd torso missile slot, it really can't perform that role anymore. Still, it can function as a close cousin to the 732 unless you're intent on trying to mount 3 PPC's - the 733 can still handle the 2 PPC + Gauss combo.

Gauss+PPC is incredibly boring when you do it on mech after mech. If you're just playing casually, you can have a lot of fun with a 2xPPC 2xUAC5 set up on the 733C. Bring loads of ammo and lay down the ranged fire. They work great for suppressing snipers as well, as you can chain fire them and rock their cockpit the minute you see them poking out of cover.

Good advice. 732 and 732C are probably your best bets.

The 733P is a pure energy build with missiles... which reduces your options.

Not as much as it used to be at one point, Im guessing about a year and a half/two years ago I considered this to be the best
You used to be able to AC20 + Dual PPC poptart plus missile support on a 733C and still have a reasonable fast and agile mech (for an assault).
The JJ nerf hurt it alot, however I still consider this mech to be pretty decent and would take it over an Atlas still. I do not know how it compares against other Assaults anymore, as if I am honest, I dont play them much these days.

733C can do simular builds to the heavy metal and can also run duel ballistics in the arm or an AC 20, can be a very good brawler with SRM's, Medium lasers, and AC 20 with JJ capabilities. This was also a famous meta mech way back in the day when pop tarting was a thing and running duel AC 5's or UAC 5's was an insta win.
733P can do quite energy focused builds and if you like not being forced to really on ammo this is your mech.
733 would be the best to do an LRM boat or SRM boat type build. Or you can go use the quirks for a few small SRM's, 2 large lasers, and an AC 10.
732 is a bit balanced and is based of the star league highlander build (note the extra E hardpoint in torso)
This is often a good generalized up highlander. It does a bit off everything well.
