I've seen in other parts of the forums people complaining about how novice scouts will lock onto enemy mechs which are way outside of effective lrm range.

What I'd like to know: is there a way to find out how far you are away from your buddies? Or is the only in game way through dialogue throught team chat?

The only other way that might be possible but would take a lot effort is to guesstimate through number of squares on the map. If that is so, then how much distance is a square across?

Show Target Overlay (Q by default) will allow you to see the distance and condition of all friendlies.

If they are in line of sight, then you can simply hover your cross-hairs over them and the range appears on the HUD.

The lines on the map grid are 360m apart. At least that's what a forum search suggested.

Nobody should complain about locking onto enemies as any info on where they are is useful. So there out of LRM range.. well that's to bad but just knowing they are there is half the battle won.

That said the previous answers are quite right, Q is your button to know distances and info on friendly mechs in your line of sight.

Another tip, as a fellow (sometime) scout - call out when targets are in the open or behind cover, or just target those in the open, so people without line of sight aren't just blasting rocks & buildings. Making the target flash (hit 'r' repeatedly) can be faster than typing, as long as everyone knows what you're doing.

It's not your job to be the E-Harmony guy between opponents and allied missile boats. If a missile boater ever says, "I have the ability to kill people, but never have the targets!" they're overlooking their own passivity and problems with positioning. Just because Artemis is bugged right now doesn't mean you should bend over backwards for people to abuse it.

If you are trying to pull targets for LRM boats, it IS important to make sure you're not sticking your neck out when they don't have a shot. It's also generally better to use a UAV if you want to be risky and still provide targets. It'll allow for target acquisition if you die on the approach/egress and allows targeting through ECM. Knowing where/what all the enemy has makes it one of the most effective modules in the game.

This practice, like the tendency of some scouts to cycle through all targets, is that just as your LRMs get lock and your load of missiles is away you lose lock, and a volley of missiles along with their cool-down time is wasted. Recommend holding your lock as long as possible.

Oh, I don't advocate doing it continually (and certainly not while missiles are incoming), but only to garner attention (in my lrm-boat, I pick up on the 'new target available' sound much more than a text message). Absolutely hold lock while missiles are in the air, but break lock when targets go for cover and look like they'll stay there.

Thank you for the replies. I was thinking that a lot of the new guys don't know about this (and I certainly didn't). This could clear up some of the confusion and allow for new scouts to flourish and be good scouts.

Right on the first part. The second part is old.

Current grids are now all consistent, and it was either 500 or 1,000. Believe it's 500 from one side to the other, and 1,000 meters square.

It has a couple bugs. Artemis is a direct fire only system that is currently giving its bonuses regardless of LOS to target. If you fire from behind cover, for example, you're getting an Artemis (50%) bonus when you should be getting no bonus (regular LRM salvo). It also applies its bonuses to Streak missiles, which it clearly shouldn't.
