And does it make a difference if I'm in a light? I'm kind of at a loss. Legs and arms seem fragile, and the torsi and cockpit seem... important.

Thanks. :(

Head. If you get hit there, you are dead anyway. And as a scout you almost never get headshot.

What mech and what/how much ammo are you stuffing in there?

My (limited) experience with speedy mechs is that they usually go down from hits to the CT or legs. Actually, getting legged usually leads to CT hits, and I usually don't get double-legged. They often lose on arm or the other, but more often lose the CT first.

This means to me that the ammo in my X-5 or my Sarah's Jenner should go in the side torso.

I worried for a minute about a critical hit in the side torso setting off my ammo, but by the time of full launch (in 1 month) the devs should have enabled crits against engines. Also, since MGs have been over-buffed and are crit-eating monsters now, they're going to find that ammo and whatever else you wanted to protect, no matter where you put it.

It depends on the mech. Generally with an XL engine you don't want to put the ammo in the torsos, but if you usually don't lose armor there then it's reasonably safe to do so.

You put the ammo in the same place everyone puts them in - the legs.

Head is good for one. then anything else I recommend the arms. Legs are top target for fast movers, arms hardly hit.

The arms provide the best protection for ammo for lights.

The Raven's arms are tiny... the Jenner's arms are bigger, but they are still relatively small.

If you're really concerned though, you could get away with putting it in the torsos on the Jenner WITH something like DHS buffering it as the Jenner's side torsos are pretty tiny. The Ravens however cannot get away with that (their torsos are their defining feature, but you don't want to play with fire).

As you can see, even in lights it depends on the mech and how much ammo we're talking about. I completely agree that the first ton of ammo goes in the head though.

You can put in the legs as well, if they destroy your leg they you are dead usually shortly after.

Sounds to me like you should test a few locations and see what suits your game style, everyone pilots their mechs differently :P

This is typically where my second ton in a light goes.

Jenner put it in the torso. I run jenners all the time and never get killed by ammo explosions.
Head is also a good place since its the first spot that ammo is removed from.
bigger mechs goes in the leg.

general rule of thumb, never put ammo in the side torso. EVER. doesn't matter XL or standard, ammo in the side torso is a bad idea, side torsos are popular targets, having ammo there increases the odds of you losing the side torso and the arm unnecessarily.

ammo is used in the following order: HD --> CT --> RT --> LT--> LA --> RA--> LL--> RL

so, assuming you're using your ammo, the head, and CT are the best place to put ammo as it will be used first. most people go for legs next, as most people loose arms faster than legs, but it really depends on the mech. i never load ammo in the legs of a light mech if i can avoid it, as Lights do get legged with regularity. ammo placement is a combination of weapon type, ammo usage, and mech design. Jenners and Cicada's, for example have TINY tiny arms, and it is incredibly rare to get more than a glancing blow to the arm, let alone actually lose it, so storing ammo in the arms is usually a safe call, catapult, not as much, though if you lose your arms on a catapult, you might be better off loosing the ammo as well.

CT? Really? No disrespect, but isn't the center torso kind of a bad place to put it? Don't you take a lot of fire there?

I rarely carry more than 5 tons of ammo (with my AC/20), I'm not sure how many slots you need. But I would go Head then Legs. Arms and Torso are a bad idea of ammo, if I absolutely had to stash some more (after filling the head and legs) I would go CT. People may groan at the Head and CT choices, but most likely you will burn through that before taking too much damage to make it an issue.

1st Ton in the Head
2 and 3 CT
MORE: one of the Side Torsos padded by anything you can manage to fit around it.

Not in the legs since that is where everyone is aiming no sense giving them a freebie if they manage a crit. Torso because lets face it if anyone manages a hit there it means you have been legged already or someone got really lucky. Either way you are probably dead immediately or real soon.

Look at it from the flip side too, ammo explosion when they blow off an arm or leg hurts other places, if you're getting hit CT on a light by 10+ points of damage to your INTERNALS then you are a wind gust close to dead anyway, they pop your CT and you don't really need to worry about the ammo explosion it may have caused.

*Edit* Heh, it seems alot of us put ammo in the ct :)

Iv NEVER died to a CT ammo explosion before, my theory is that the CT is a pretty cramped area of the mech if your CT armor is gone your pretty boned anyways.

Of course. but usually by the time i loose the armor, i've already used the ammo, or if i still have ammo in the CT and the armor has been stripped it usually means i've taken so much damage so fast that i'm going to die in a couple seconds anyways, ammo explosion or not.
