While I can appreciate from a game balance perspective how all of the mechs are essentially balanced to everything else, I find it frustrating that after all my grinding, my mech is really no better now than it was when I first bought it.

Sure, I've tried a whole lot of different kinds of weapons, and I've added a few points of armor, but my fine-tuned mech today has no real advantage over what it was the day I bought it. For a long-time MMO and FPS gamer like myself, this is really dissapointing.

It would be great to have multiple grades of mech components - perhaps unlockable via General XP, or even General XP and MC. Not only would having multiple versions of each piece keep me focused and playing longer, but it might even further our ability to customize our mechs (which are currently extremely limited once slots, tonnage, permanent static components, and hardpoints are all factored in).

Example: Small laser cannons currently have pulse lasers, but what if both standard and pulse were measured in grades? A small laser mk1 laser would start at baseline, but a small laser mk2 could have increased range, damage, or reduced firing time.

Layered gear tiers could open up a lot of posibilities. It might encourage more diversity in builds. We might even see some machine guns in use out there if they were viable.

You thing going from a base line mech to a mech that is elited out (which gets all of the elite skills AND twice the benefit of the basic skills) isn't better? It makes a WORLD of difference to me. Might be my play style is different but I can easily feel how much better my mech is.

Bad idea. It would increase the differences between players even further.
Right now, long-time players have more experience at steering their Mechs and have more GXP. And you suggest to add a further level of advantage.

IMO a player should be able to at least stand a chance with a Trial-Mech.

Those kinds of upgrades are incompatible with the Battletech universe. The BT universe is one in which nearly anything can be purchased with C-bills. Even a novice pilot can buy the best equipment, especially if he is a prince of one of the Great Houses.

Your suggestion would transform the game from a Battletech experience to more of a WoW experience.

Not by much. This is a PvP arena of walking tanks. WoW is a quest driven fantasy realm with dragons and undead. I'm not asking to re-imagine the whole battletech universe here. I'm just saying that I've played out the maps and mechs available and that I'm starting to get bored.

Gear upgrades would give me something to work toward.

gear upgrades are fleeting and trivial. why do you think WoW has to release new content so much faster? it's because the players who want gear as an incentive get bored of gear the moment they get it. It's nothing but a carrot on a stick and unless you have an endless progressive path of gear to constantly attain you WILL be bored of it.

Direct upgrades from gear also gives large advantages to players based on time/money invested in the game and creates an even larger wall for new players to climb over.

It's stuff like this that killed APB (well, amongst other things). And trust me getting a Mech Elite'ed makes a world of difference. If you don't believe play a bunch of matches with your mech and then go load into the Training grounds, which, last I checked, doesn't give you those efficiencies when you play. It feels like you're moving in molasses.

IIRC, the devs say that they are looking into having "branded" weapons within each classification to represent the various arms manufacturers - i.e., a Martell Medium Pulse Laser versus a Diverse Optics Medium Pulse Laser. The different brands will probably manifest as having minutely different stats (slightly higher recharge and slightly lower damage, for example) and I'm going to guess in c-bill price as well.

Good point. Although I like his idea for depth and detail.
