Stone Rhino (Behemoth): Production information
ManufacturerTokasha MechWorks
Class: Assault
Cost: *
Technical specifications:
Mass: 100 tons
Chassis: Star League Monster (Standard)
Armor: Compound 12A1 Standard with CASE
Engine: 300 Standard
Speed: 54.0 km/h
Jump Jets: Grandthrust Mk. 5
Armament: The design featured Large Pulse Lasers in each arm, twin Gauss Rifles in the torsos fired through the dorsal barrel, and an almost superfluous Small Pulse Laser located just below the cockpit. The Stone Rhino also sported an interesting feature; each arm contained a retractable, shock-absorbing cowl covering the weapon barrels. This allowed MechWarriors to use the arms as battering rams without damaging the weaponry.

Variants:
  • Stone Rhino 3 - Variant made use of two Large Pulse Lasers in each arm and two ATM 9s. Two ER Micro Lasers protect the 'Mech's backside, while the other other equipment was removed to add heat sinks.
I was around to play MechWarrior - MWLL. I have played them all. So far MechWarrior 2 was my favorite. An the Rhino was my favorite sniping mech. Won't mind seen it remade and bought back to glory.

I voted "sorta".

As explained in the other (relatively-recent) thread asking for the same 'Mech, the Stone Rhino (IS designation: "Behemoth") is, itself, among the Unseen; it is apparently based on artwork from Victor Musical Industries (now Victor Entertainment), a Japanese company that has produced and distributed anime-related products since the early 1970s.

Also, if one looks at the TRO description and specifications, the BT version has always had twin Gauss Rifles (one in each side-torso), though some descriptions argue that both Gauss Rifles fire through the single dorsal assembly seen in the Unseen artwork.

As with the Marauder and its "gun-over-CT vs gun-in-RT" issue, the Stone Rhino's Reseen artwork, with its actual depiction of double Gauss Rifle barrels, is a much better reflection of the actual BT/MW specifications than the Unseen artwork.

Also, it should be noted that the Reseen artwork is demonstrated by the second variant, the Stone Rhino 2, rather than the primary variant. Here is the associated artwork, from TRO 3055U:
Posted Image

Aside from that, the Stone Rhino is as valuable to the Clans as it is rare, so while they did have them it was rare for them to be seen in any role other than second-line garrison work.
More specifically:

Quote

Bringing awesome firepower, those machines cannot be used effectively by commanders because they cannot afford to lose one. Mainly seen in Clan Smoke Jaguar, only a small number of those beasts have been described. No other Clan appeared to field this design, but because it is a venerable design, other Clans are suspected to possess some, widely spread throughout their toumans.

Only one Clan - one destined for Annihilation - is confirmed to field the 'Mech, and even if others have access to the chassis, they're so valuable that they would never see action on the front lines.

Also, that the Stone Rhino 2 isn't produced until 3061 means that there is exactly one variant (that is, one possible hardpoint layout) of the Stone Rhino (which isn't an OmniMech) available until then.

Finally, if the MWO art team were to use the Reseen visuals as a basis for a MWO version of the Stone Rhino (which, IMO, would likely be the case... assuming, of course, that any of the Unseen would be included in MWO).

In conclusion, the Stone Rhino isn't a bad 'Mech, but it's got quite a bit going against it as far as showing up in MWO anytime soon (if ever).

I'm always for mechs that are wider and have a lower profile than humanoid mechs. So certainly, I'd like this along with the Crab, Bushwacker, and the King Crab. Not first, though.

The original artwork for the Behemoth is just beutiful (just like many of the unseens) but (again as with most of the unseens) the later attempts at reinterpretations are horrible. For me it is the original look or none at all.

This is MWO though - none of the mechs are getting the "original" look, unseen or not. It's a good thing too - the redesigns have been top notch so far.

Reseen. The devs avoid any discussion of the Unseen/Reseen like the plague for as l have been in beta. Personally I like most of the Reseen versions, but those were all Project Pheonix-fied. And while I like them in some cases like the Marauder and do not like some them (looking at you Incubus 4). Overall I think the reseen has managed to do justice to the original sheet layouts and somewhat preserve the original look.

No need for polls.

Of course we'd all like to see as many mechs as possible.

Next thread please.

So.... 2 Gauss, 2 PPC as opposed to 1 Gauss, 3 PPC or 4 PPC. Well, it'd really shake things up. Maybe we should have Gausszilla too, then we have have all the combinations of PPC and Gauss over four hardpoints. People would be able to make whatever mech they wanted. Hell, you could more or less remove the others at that point.

Summary of the following material:
Due to several concrete factors, the Mauler would actually be a poor candidate for MWO unless and until the in-game timeline advances significantly (to at least 3060, though 3062 would be better still for it).

----------

The MAL-1R, the primary variant, "just came out" in 3049.

The MAL-C doesn't exist until next year (3051), and only differs from the MAL-1R by dropping one ton of AC ammo for a C3 Slave Unit (which does not yet exist in-game, even as a dummy/filler item).

The MAL-2R doesn't exist until 3060, and requires IS versions of the UAC/2 and ER Medium Laser.

The MAL-3R doesn't exist until 3062 (though, it at least differs from all of its relatives with arm-mounted ballistics (one LB 10-X in each arm) and a head-mounted energy weapon (Small Laser)).

The MAL-1K doesn't exist until 3069, and requires Light AC/5s and Snub-Nose PPCs.

The MAL-1PT5 isn't a canon variant (but neither are a number of the Hero 'Mechs Posted Image).
However, it is identical to the (also non-canon) Linesman - the same hardpoint layout as all of the other Maulers (minus the -3R) with x2 MLas, x4 AC/2, and x2 LRM-10.

The Daboku is considered a separate 'Mech with only a single variant (which was considered an abject failure, on top of that), and the weapons load and layout are effectively identical to the Mauler (with the latter merely exchanging the Large Lasers for ER variations).
Even the technically non-canon Linesman (a Capellan-built predecessor to the Daboku, and also considered an abject failure) carries a similar weapon layout (albeit mounting Medium Lasers in place of the Daboku's Large Lasers).

Moreover, the MAL-C variant of the Mauler merely exchanges one ton of AC ammo for a C3 Slave unit; again, the minimum hardpoint layout is identical to that of the basic MAL-1R (such that either could very be easily created from the other).

Even if the Linesman and Daboku were reconsidered to be merely other Mauler variants (for the purposes of getting around MWO's three variant requirement), everything that would be available in the timeline's near term (Linesman, Daboku, MAL-1R Mauler, and MAL-C Mauler) require the same set of minimum hardpoints in the same locations; there exists very little overall variation among them, and even adding extra hardpoints would accomplish little more than making one vastly preferred to the others (potentially to the same degree as, say, allowing only one of them to have access to ECM).

Additionally, at 90 tons, the Mauler/Daboku/Linesman would be competing (insomuch as it can) with the equally-fast, jump-capable, ostensibly more-popular Highlander.
Even the lighter (80-ton) Victor might be a better candidate for an assault-class ballistics boat - the VTR-9A1 variant would have three distinct sets of ballistic hardpoints (the AC in the arm, and MGs that would likely be moved from the left- and right-legs to the respective side-torsos), and is jump-capable, and is generally faster (default speed of 64.8 kph, with a 320 engine).

In summary: the Mauler doesn't have the available variants for the game's XP system, and there is effectively zero diversity between variants (as every variant (except the -3R) can be exactly reproduced on every other variant (except the -3R), and the eight (8) minimum required hardpoints don't leave much room for expansion), and this is why the Mauler is a relatively poor choice relative to other 'Mechs (like the Banshee, Zeus, and/or Cyclops).

The only thing the Mauler has over the Stone Rhino is that the Mauler is not Unseen.

Its a yes here. This mech suggests multi player, also a plus.

Prototypes would exist before official introduction of mechs to the factions in lore. So they would have to be ultra rare. And likely super expensive.

The Behemoth is Star League and I could be wrong about this but doesnt that make it a very old design?
