Am I right in assuming that if I see the red icon of the three missile-looking streaks on a locked mech, that means someone's missiles are heading toward it?

Yup!

It doesn't sound unreasonable. and as you get better, you'll earn more, but winning more, doing more damage, and other ways that will suit your mech and playstyle.

If you're spending real money, Premium time is great if you have the time to play. I purchased 13 mechs in the month I had premium time (3 Assaults, 5 lights, 2 mediums, 3 heavies), so I'm pretty sure I got more with the 2500 MC than I would have just buying a mech outright, but I had time at that point. I have less now, so buying a hero mech is a bit more tempting if I were willing to spend a bit more money.

Otherwise, save up your cash, be careful on what you buy (don't go for Artemis if you later want to undo it, or other upgrades that are pure cash sinks, make sure you really want a weapon before you buy), and just practice and get better.

Another tip, is if you're pugging it, once you die, drop out and join another game in a different mech (Helps to have 2 or more owned mechs, but the champion mech of the month will do in a pinch). You end up not wasting time waiting for the end of a game when you could be earning more cash.

Also, Conquest tends to pay a bit better (Seems to be about 10-15% over the course of a ton of games), though with the loss payout nerf it might not anymore. The matches tend to take a bit longer though too, so there may not be any real gain.

How do the returns on different matches tend to work out? Skirmish vs Conquest vs Assault... what's going to get me more cbills or xp or gxp?

So far i've really only played Skirmish and once accidentally dropped in a Conquest where the entire team wasn't typing and i didn't really know which way was up.

Should i be looking at other match modes or is Skirmish the best paying?

Also, I see people grabbing unit and lance leaderships and then doing nothing with it. Are they just doing so to grab extra cbills and xp?

Spotting Assist: targetting an enemy mech who is hit by missiles (might be limited to lrms).

Nope can confirm this works with any damage dealt.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can see balancing C-Bill earnings is difficult, as they want to make money and also want to keep everyone from rapidly unlocking all the things they want.

I shall continue spamming that R key and taking pot shots at every mech I see for maximum bonuses.

Do you guys feel that Assault mode generally nets you more c-bills? I imagine the slightly faster round times should end up having a higher income over time. Also, does losing your mech in a game reduce your income in any way apart from the potential loss of kills/assists/etc?

Spamming R won't help much. What you want is a mech no one else is targeting. IE an empty red triangle over their head. Otherwise you have to be the closest to the mech, and then have someone else shoot it without a lock or using your lock.

Assault is almost ALWAYS more c-bills per minute than conquest.

How do you figure? Most people treat Conquest like Assault and just try to win via kills, and you get the C-bills for resources gathered even if you win by kills.

I prefer Conquest since if you win, you get C-bills for resources gathered even if it's a win by killing the other team.

Skirmish can take longer since if there's a single enemy Light playing Hide and Seek you can't cap the base to end it (and get 75 XP for the whole team, plus an extra 50 XP for anyone who helped cap).

Nope, it's either someone in a group taking control so no one else tries to "organize" the lances, ie group lgihts with lights etc. Sometimes it's a guy who thinks he's the MWO version of Napoleon or Clausewitz and he does it so he can spam attack/defend orders on the map.

I do my cbill earning by way of lrm 2x20 artemus as of late, don't worry about spamming lock you wont upset this boat because I spam it myself while I search for targets.
once I have targets I will position myself to be independent of the pug teams locks, most of the time when I fire a volly its my lock.
im not conserned with kills but weakening multiple enemy from between the 500 to 200m range I follow the brawlers closely because brawlers are my payday.
skirmish mode is my preferred because more brawlers tend to group up giving you more assists and saviour bonuses in a shorter time frame.
