When I run in a lance with someone who wants to use a missile boat I will usually grab one of my scouts and just do a bunch of spotting. It's a nice change of pace from brawling which is my preferred mech combat.

That's a issue that needs to be fixed right now all we have to do is press R and about 100 LRM;s will be shot at the target were harassing. Its ridiculously accurate too for indirect fire with a spotter.

Thanks for telling us the tale of a pug player playing against bads.

I like how someone points out what can be done in the game and when the results don't match up to what they want to hear, it is always because everyone else is such a bad player.

Or is it perhaps that people tend to think that just because they don't have enough skill to pull it off, it must not be possible?

Pretty sad really.

Yes you are so skilled that nobody can pull off what you can, not even seasoned and successful competitive 12 man players that disagree with you. You must be THAT GOOD, right?!

The bigger the map the more important scouting becomes. Unfortunately people don't seem to want bigger maps.

Terra Therma is a good example. It's big and you can't see very far. Feedback from scouts on the enemy's location actually becomes more necessary. This doesn't really apply to PUGs though because info is seldom communicated between them.

With maps that take an Atlas less than 2 minutes to cross, dedicated scouts are pointless.

TBH, though the upcoming increase in awards for 'scouting' will be nice, they're pretty superficial to me. I would get more satisfaction if my team wins as a direct result of the info I give back to them. That won't happen on small maps.

Role warfare right now is pretty damn dead. 8 assaults is the best team in the game.

Where are people playing 8-mans? :D

But yeah, I agree that outside the first few minutes (or less sometimes), scouts are not needed and can be replaced with a flanker/harasser to get some initial intel.

Scouting in the traditional sense (send out a light 'mech to find, target, and relay data on the enemy) has been dealt a number of severe blows in MWO:
* It's not rewarded with CB or XP in any appreciable amount
* An assault is as good at it as a light, and gets rewarded as much (or rather little) for it.
* Seismic sensor both removes the need for close scouting and makes sneaking up on someone near impossible
* Aerial Drone is way better at relaying targeting data than any 'mech, light or not.
* And now 3PV

All this means is that lights have little choice but become Strikers, whether they want to or not; it's the only viable role for a light in MWO.

When the only role for 'mechs is "do as much damage as possible", is anyone surprised we have a heavy bias towards the upper end of the weight scale?

Actually it is rewarded because knowing the bad guys position is a game changer if people decide to do something about it. Scouting is useless when the team is just taking pot shots like World of Tanks fail all game long. Scout, harrass, and flank, get it done and win.
