It's a thin line. In mechwarrior 4, suicides could be used as a weapon against others, since it sent your mech into going critical, if you ejected next to someone, your mech did splash damage to them.
MekTek, due to player outcry at the tactic, added a pointloss penalty to it in the 'battle' mode. [a broken score system where a light mech with machineguns will tend to top leaderboards because of how the game caculates score]
I definately think there should be a penalty in store... even if you eject, you've STILL lost your mech... so perhaps a c-bill cost, but not a pilot xp loss.

In MW4, doing damage with your mech going critical was pretty much the point of hitting Ctrl-Z. There's really nothing wrong with that.
In MWO's system, it seems even more balanced.... Because you're choosing to totally destroy your mech, and incur maximum repair costs, but possibly for the chance to damage the enemy one more time.
It added an extra layer of depth to MW4... you needed to make sure your team got clear of a crippled mech before you killed it.

Eh, it was also HORRIBLY lore breaking, as it's VERY rare a mech goes critical like that, even with the expanded 'engine explosion' expanded rules in the TT... it's an incredably rare event that basically only happens when tons of damage is done to the engine.

Heh, I think you're talking to the wrong guy then... I don't tend to really care much about the lore, and more about the actual practical effects on gameplay. We'll have to agree to disagree on that point then.
