ok, i finally saved up enough c-bills to buy my first mech, and I thought a sniper mech might be the way to go for me. I chose the BJ-3 and swapped out the PPCs for ERPPCs, dropped the JJs, and added 4 more DHSs, but I am still having trouble with overheating. should I drop the medium lasers for small, chain fire the PPCs, or am I just FUBAR? I would be very grateful for any help, thanks.

Hail,

This should work nice, keep the JJs they will keep you alive. You can swap out 4 SLasers instead of 2 MLasers, personal preference. Also, some folks run one ERPPC and PPC combination or even dual PPC.

BJ-3 Jump Sniper

Just remember, keep moving and do not go toe to toe with Assaults or they will shred you.

On my sniper-jack, I dropped all secondary weapons in favor of Max engine and heatsinks. If you're playing or BJ sniper well, if something gets into close range a) your ER PPCs don't have a minimum so will contiue to be just as effective and B) you should be running like hell to find a new firing position and getting out of the brawl.

But that's just me. I've seen lots of BJs out there that do use smalls or mediums to back up the PPCs.

don't forget, there are two Pilot Lab skills you will unlock that will give you improved cooling/threshold! Further investment in the Blackjack family will allow you o unlock the elite tier which will then double those two cooling buffs.

If you're using ERPPCs, you have much less reliance on 'backup' weapons since you have no minimum range. One of my Quickdraws does great with two ERPPCs and two medium lasers, even though on paper more weapons would seem 'better' but more guns wold only be a more dangerous heat curve.

ERPPC's are very, very hot. Either use them or your Medium Lasers, but don't be alpha striking will all of them.

In a BJ, you're going to lack space to pack lots of DHS, so your heat threshold is going to be lower. This means 100% heat for you would be ~50 or so, not sure exactly how many DHS you're packing. Firing just your two ERPPC's should push you near half heat, and 4 MLas is another 16.

Basically, if you're packing two ERPPC's, that's all you're really going to be using most of the time. Stay at longer range as much as possible, and when you get close, pick and choose your weapons carefully.

Hot builds can be effective, but you need firing discipline to make them work.

My BJ-3 that I have a high success rate with has 2x regular PPCs, 3x ML, 2x JJ, Endo Steel, FF, standard 225 engine, 11 DHS, and a total of 268 armor. Top speed is 81 kph, 90kph with speed tweak.

Oh, also, make sure you move some of the rear armor to the front. The Black Jacks have a lot of rear armor.

Ahh yea the BJ-3...
Its one of the more advanced techniques.
But what you do is you slowly and gently whistle, dont push the air too fast or you will run out.
Its all about lung capacity!
Then next...
Oh **** sorry. you meant the battlemech? the one called Blackjack?
****!
My bad!

Welp, nothing to see here then! move along!

(just realized I guess my post will be deleted if I dont post anything useful aswell...)

Well the BJ for starters is a special mech, the BJ-3 though is not the worst of them, but the only thing it really does well is snipe since it has quite few hardpoints for brawling imo.
A good thing to do is first decide if you want to run XL or standard engine.

The XL will give you more weight to put into weapons and will allow you to run fast and pack 2 PPC's or ERPPC's which really makes the mech shine.
Another option is to opt for 2 PPC's and 4 med lasers, making it look like this : http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a19fd93a008dc3b
Ofc there are other options, but this makes full use of everything the BJ-3 offers and honestly the PPC's are for sniping, so mounting them in the torso is a great way to amplify this as it makes it easier to aim.
Plus you still have the 4 meds in the arms and are able to move them up and down if a light comes close.

Just my opinion of the mech ofc B)
But feel free to use it if you like it (its the stock loadout anyway :D )

Cheers and best wishes from your friendly neighborhood forum dweller

When I was originally leveling blackjacks I used two ERppcs I had from another mech and just that, I had them in seperate groups so I could fire around corners without wasting heat, or chaining them to gun down pesky lights. They have gotten hotter sense then by a smigin but the idea remains the same.

Im going to assume your using a stock 180 engines, I actually used a 225 I took from a BJ-1X (My suggestion for your BJs is the BJ-1X then the BJ-1, keep the engine from the 1X its handy.)

BJ-3 ERPPCs <---assumed with 180 engine, jump jets are INCREDIBLY useful for BJs.

Now note that the DHS upgrade is damn expensive, which makes it impractical to do with all of your mechs that your grinding for mech tree unlocks (especially with the current state of the c-bill income) so I suggest for one of your mechs this version of the BJ-1 Cheapbastard which is a downgraded version of my primary ride, a ac20 runs much cooler and is 900k cheaper to field than DHS but still requires endo steel. You can also substitute just about any of the ballistic weapons for the AC20, a UAC5 is a good alternative due to the recent buff and is slightly cheaper and lighter.

Heeheehee. BJ advice. Someone had to.

IF heat's your issue you might try going back to normal PPCs and SLas.

When I first got my BJ3, I went with the stock 180STD engine. (oh god BJ and STD!)
Took out the 2PPC and accompanying lazers and replace with 3 large lazer, and all the DHS I can fit.
Keep the LLaz on chain fire and you can keep firing for quite sometime.

Hang behind your team heavy or assault and pick on whatever they are shooting at.

I agree with some above. On my BJ3, I use PPC, not ERPPC. PPC is the longer range weapon. If they are in close, use the MLAS. I use 4x Mlas, and 2PPC. So I can do 40 pts alpha - but it is hot. That is only for kill or desperation. Otherwise, one group or the other. If mid range, you can alternate, but it is a hotter build.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I think I'm going to have to spend a little more time with trial mechs sinch I am broke at the moment, but from what I have gathered dropping the Medium lasers and maxing out the engine might be just what I need. I never thought I could go toe to toe with an Atlas( I have played mechwarrior 2-4, so i"m not complety ignorant) , but I just want to hang in the margins and harrass from a distance. thanks again.

The BJ1DC is my main Cbill earner lol.
You get assist bonus for even landing 1point of damage, plus saviour and defend bonus if the target was killed seconds after you land that hit.
Slap on 2 AC/2 and 6 SLaz and Im good to go at tearing up components for cbill and scoring assist and saviour.

And it is a cheaper investment than getting a Jag.
