If that is a question you've asked yourself, then spend 8 minutes and watch and listen to this. It might be about an entirely different game, but many of the points are still very valid to any game that has 3rd person view.

After that, check that box in Options to start the game in 1st person and forget about the existence of 3rd person view.

For me, Third person is a curiosity. It may be useful to try and figure out if you are stuck on something, plus it is nice to actually see these machines we all go hurtling around in rather then just the inside of the cockpit.

I for one will stay inside my machine where a Mechwarrior belongs, though I do appreciate the work done.

Third person is fun if your team is winning and you want a different view of the battle. Especially firing ballistics, or watching missiles hit your mech. But for actual competitive play, stick to first.

I was already using it sometimes when I want to move somewhere an it's block by other team mech. Other than that, some ppl could find funnier 3rd person but in my case I prefer first view.

This video basically reinforces my beliefs regarding the 3rd POV. I really am annoyed that PGI waisted time, money, and additional resources developing it for MW:O. I'm glad to see that the version they have implemented does not offer as much benifit to those using it as I originally feared it would but I still stand in my belief that 3rd POV has no business in this style of game. If your Lance Mates are blocking your view then like it's mentioned in the video that's part of the game and helps to add to the intensity of the game. Hopefully 3rd POV is not improved any further and remains in it's current pathetic version as it's already annoying that people can and do use it to peek over nearby structures to spot enemies. Any futher advancement on 3rd POV would only further hurt the game play and make this fun game into just another boring FPS.

Translation: "I don't use it, I don't like it, therefore nobody else should be able to enjoy it"

I love people like this.

I like third person because I find kb/mouse cumbersome and difficult to use with the torso twist mechanics in first person view. I'd much prefer to be able to setup a joystick the way I'd like, but unfortunately this game is badly coded for joystick use. I'd much prefer to play a supposed mech sim like Ive played every other mech sim ever made... not like counter-strike with BattleMechs.

I die every single time i use 3rd person.
The missing minimap is a huge handicap, people should try it before crying "3RD PERSON IZ UFAAAIR!1!!111"

Archio - it's not a question of "no one else should be able to enjoy it".

It's a question of "no one should be able to get a huge advantage, forcing me to play outside my prefered vision mode simply not to gimp myself with limited vision.

The chief issue is ofcourse the ability to look over and around obstacles that otherwise obscure your view. The positive thing is, the advantages of doing so are very minor in the practical reality of the game, and for gunnery, 1st person is the way to go. And if you are having trouble orienting your 'mech without an outside camera, then you are simply weak.

I have tried it, Don't like the feel. First person is my preferred. Although I have found it handy when trying to walk backwards in my Atlas. Just wondering though if anyone knows if there is plans for the drones to be able to be destroyed?

I use 3rd person during non-combat situations just to see my awesome mech.

I find that Mechwarrior Online's 3rd Person view is actually the Real Hardmode. Your Arms are locked and you can't get the extra 15% arm flex to hit light mechs. Not that you Can't See anything in front of you (About 30% to be more precise). I can see it helping new players understand movement but the arm lock also cripples this mode. I can see how it helps new players understand their Damage Doll as well. I like that you don't have a mini map or compass or Ally HUD. But if this is to be Easy Mode the Drone needs to stop blinking and the New players will at least need the compass.

By the way...
Few people have figured out that the Drone actually blocks laser shots and missile shots, because it's made out of Unobtainium.
I can see how this would block a missile trail. A Slight buff considering 3rd person Locks your arms, AND THEREFORE SLOWS DOWN YOUR TORSO SPEED.

Easy Mode?
Try piloting a Mech on Terra Therma With a Blinking Drone. >.<
Just another slight showing that PGI can be smarter than the MWO community.

The real problem is that PGI WILL buff 3pv from here on onwards. They'll say "3PV is not where we wanted it to be" and systematically remove each and every hindrance to it's use, until we have an arcade mech game.

I recommend sticking with 1PV only until further patches hit the servers.

I really wish people would stop viewing this in absolutes. The idea that I should play exclusively in 1st person or exclusively in 3rd person idea is foolish. 3rd person absolutely conveys certain advantages, specifically it provides you with a significantly larger view of the surrounding terrain to the point I can see around corners and over buildings, which was impossible while locked into my cockpit view.

Yet, there are certain drawbacks to remaining in third person view, but players are not forced to remain in that view. You can easily and readily toggle between the two perspectives to exploit the intelligence advantage provided by 3rd person and the combat advantages provided by 1st person. Anyone who believes this is a zero sum game of perspective absolutes is a fool. The best players & competent pre-made groups will utilize the advantages third person provides to allow them to scout enemy force movements, but they'll quickly swap back to first person for any real combat.

I'll believe in the disadvantages of third person the moment a player is forced to play an entire round from that perspective and not have the option to toggle back and forth between the two.

Thank you for explaining the reason why we should have separate Hardcore queues for 1pv and 1/3pv matches. I prefer 1pv and that ppl on both sides are also limited to 1pv for the equality of not having advantages. But sure, allow twitch freaks to have their fun to in 1pv or 3pv in normal queue matches.

Yep. It's the only way to see your paint job while you're still alive.

Because they again destroyed my indicator if my missile pods are open or closed (and I forget if I pushed my open missile bays button ;) ) I use 3PV. Now I can flash ppl with my missile pods and see me doing it!
