3rd person was the reason I only kind of liked Armored core. I thought Chromehounds 3rd person was okay but I used the gun scope as often as I could
This video did a great job of explaining the dilemma. It seems to be a issue of immersion vs winning at any cost.
Personally I choose immersion and first person, in fact right now I am debating to use a joy stick or not. I like using the mouse but I feel battle Mechs wouldn't steer with four buttons that's why in the cockpit the pilot has a handled thruster and joystick in hand.
First person all the way!

both. first person to fight, 3rd when I edge my scout mech up the hill to see all the snipers hiding on the other side. I may not be able to target you that way, but I can report your positions on teamspeak and organize the flank.

I find that Mechwarrior Online's 3rd Person view is actually the Real Hardmode. Your Arms are locked and you can't get the extra 15% arm flex to hit light mechs. Not that you Can't See anything in front of you (About 30% to be more precise). I can see it helping new players understand movement but the arm lock also cripples this mode. I can see how it helps new players understand their Damage Doll as well. I like that you don't have a mini map or compass or Ally HUD. But if this is to be Easy Mode the Drone needs to stop blinking and the New players will at least need the compass.
By the way...
Few people have figured out that the Drone actually blocks laser shots and missile shots, because it's made out of Unobtainium.
I can see how this would block a missile trail. A Slight buff considering 3rd person Locks your arms, AND THEREFORE SLOWS DOWN YOUR TORSO SPEED.
Easy Mode?
Try piloting a Mech on Terra Therma With a Blinking Drone. >.<
Just another slight showing that PGI can be smarter than the MWO community.

You're doing it wrong. You don't use third person view all the time for it's tactical advantage. You use it to peek around corners, waiting for the right time to ambush someone, and even if you should move out of cover or not. If you're in it all the time you're doing it wrong which is why you don't understand the complaints about it.
