Instead of a melee attack, Mechs could have a customizable function set into their arms. It would be set up in mechlab and implemented in play automatically. Some of them would ideally be in an arm that would otherwise carry no weapons to avoid targeting issues.

Functions could include: Blocking head component, dealing a quick melee strike on contact, grabbing and holding an enemy mech, swinging to counterbalance a mech in turning faster, conveying hand gestures to signal teammates, deflecting or absorbing incoming missiles, or something specific to a game mode (capture the flag comes to mind, but obviously it would have to be something relevant to Battletech lore)

Anything else we could use those big arms for besides holding that invisible cup of tea?

Well if the mechs fingers actually work I can see a Atlas grabbing a commando in a choke hold or do maby a 200m throw if you got a strong enough engine to do it. Though the Atlas would take on the tons and possibly damage the leg/arm structure from lifting 25+ tons and then try to ether hold em or throw em which puts alot of stress on the joints. Can you imagine forcing a 100 ton rated skeleton to do more then that you take the risk of damaging the skeleton which counts as internal structure damage. Which the metals can bend and warp under tremendous pressure.

But if your out of ammo and need to still do damage maby martial arts like kung fu? Or maby you can just do a punch or a kick? This would also damage both of you but perhaps you can afford to damage a arm/leg to prevent cored out.

I wasn't suggesting mechs would pick up one another, certainly not throw them 200m, that's well out of the park for any mechwarrior game. This isn't WWE smackdown or something like that. I've heard people asking for some kind of melee combat. Some mechs which wont be featured in the game hold a giant axe in one hand, so melee combat is part of Battletech cannon and could find a way into MWO.

When I said grabbing, I imagined a slower mech grabbing a faster mech to make them an easier target for allies. Or holding a mech in front of your AC10 and not waste your ammo with a moving target.

Ultimately, as i said, these functions really only apply to mechs with a functional arm and hand that otherwise carries no weapons. Like the centurion, it's one arm is essentially a "shield" except it's only held at a fixed, awkward pose and is almost always ignored when enemies are picking off body parts. mechs like the catapult or cicada wouldn't have these functions available because their "arms" are only housing for weapons.

really, why would a battlemech have hands if not for use in combat?
