What do you guys use to make C-bills?

I was using a HBK-5P for a while but died quickly and often.
It took me a long time to save, now I'm running around in a SDR-5D and seem to be making much more, not necessarily doing more damage.

thoughts? strategies?

It doesn't matter which mech you use, the C-bills were nerfed recently so we are all making less. Ideally if you can deal damage, as well as get assists (in general just play well) its a good c-bill mech. The ability to live longer makes assaults naturally better at it, since no matter how poorly you play, you will almost always be able to alpha a serious shot on the enemy before you die.

If your a true desperado for c-bils... :)

Buy a hero mech
Equip it with a effective cheese build (varies monthly :) )

Buy Premium time
Drop in a 4 man group also using same certain unusually effective build

Right now its pcc and gauss - before it was the firebrand with 2 ac 20's

Heavy metal/Dragon slayer - 2 ppc - 1 gauss - premium time - play like a bad person

Kidding!

I find myself making more with a balanced build (Quickdraw for me) - such as one lrm 15 with brawling weapons because at a range i can still assist and at close range i can still brawl

but i admit i am not as effective as a mech who is built specifically for brawling or longe range support

but the thing i do have is a middle ground so its not just option
A: get destroyed far away as a brawler
or
B : get destroyed close range as a lrm mech

but then as i learned as a brawler or longe range support mech i tend to make more when i do play well because
that role is specified to me

that or i die fast

Make more more the more you play as a team

Hero Mech and Premium Time will increase earnings. But a couple of things you need to remember Once you start a particular block of PT it will always be on, so if you buy 30 days start if up and then can't play for some reason you will lose out. A lot of people say 1-3 days at a time so you can maximize it's earning potential.

However, should you not want to spend money for MC, your choices in a match will help increase your earnings. In lights and mediums, should you help your heavier buddies by keeping enemy lights away and shooting what they are shooting (without running in front of them nor staying right behind them so they can't maneuver), you can get kill assists and possibly savior kills. Double legging an opponent will increase salvage bonus (but only if your team WINS). Helping to cap in a conquest game (again best gains if you WIN). Spotting assists are good too (hold lock on a mech who gets hit by LRMs). Any of these things can help boost earnings.

Heavier mechs should focus on killing things. Capping in the big guys is probably not a good thing if most of the enemy team is still out there. Just make sure someone or even better a demi-lance of someones are capping.

Honestly the guys above have covered almost all points. I find running one of my hero mechs (the only ones I buy with MC,) regardless of weight class helps. I don't run premium time any more because of all the recent changes to MWO (not cracking that nut here... just saying) but I can recommend one thing that significantly increased my cbill earnings--- I drop with people in TS in my Merc Corp and regardless of my build/mech I tend to live longer and make more as we work together, much as Kesuga pointed out. If you're interested in finding someone to drop with, head over to www.phoenixdominion.com and you can find our TS and forums. Come join us for some drops in 4 man teams or even try and get into some of our 12v12's on practice nights and see if you don't come out ahead. Plus we have a fantastic section group of guys that test builds (not just flavor of the week/month,) for feasibility in pugs and competitive play.

With 12 enemies on the field, the best way to make money is to damage them and helping out your team at the same time.
You also get extra C-Bill reward for the following:
  • Component Destruction: you destroy a component(arm, leg, side torso) on an enemy, you can score this multiple times on a single enemy by ripping it apart piece by piece.
  • Kill Assist: you deal at least 1 damage to an enemy before it was killed by a teammate.
  • Savior Kill: you deal at least 1 damage to an enemy that is attacking a badly wounded teammate before it was killed by you or a teammate, within certain time.
  • Defense Kill: you kill an enemy that have attempt to capture your base(Assault) or resource point(Conquest).
  • Spotting: you lock on(press R) a target and your teammate attack and damage that target.
  • TAG/NARC: similar to spotting, but you need to use a TAG or NARC on an enemy.
Having a mech build at allow you to deal damage constantly(don't frequently overheat and packing sufficient ammo) and reliably(different weapon to cover different range and cooldown) can easily net you the above bonus.

I would recommended something that is fast and have a long reach. Personally I go with a speedy Blackjack with 2 AC/2 as my main money earner.
LRM although have very long reach and can be fire from the safety of beyond the frontline, they are do not reliably in dealing enough damage to score Kills and can be easily countered by enemy AMS, unless you specialize your mech to carry large number of LRMs or only using them as complimentary to your primary weapons.

UAC/5 builds have been performing pretty well for me lately. Usually hovers around 100K unless my puggie kicks in and I die to my own stupidity. Lots of damage = lots of c-bills, through damage, component destruction, kills, and assists.

Well assists make you money so lrms or long range anything that you can hit multiple mechs in a match are good to start. However, savior kills really get you alot of both c-bills and xp, however that is harder to farm, more luck.

Avoid consumables like the plague! It's not hard to have a negative c-bill game using UAV (no spotting bonuses) and coolant flush …

Yeah, if you are c-bill earning any consumable is a bad idea!

My biggest moneymaker has always been my Ilya Muromets, if you're willing to drop the real cash monies. You can go the 3xUAC route, or the fast double gauss route, or the PPC and AC route, and it's all awesome.

My biggest Cbill non-hero earner is my Jenner D. Go light hunting, blip every mech you see for the assist.

The Ilya Muromets with 3xUAC5 is probably my most consistent money earner. It lacks the killer punch of some weapons, but there are few builds capable of matching it for DPS and sustained fire at medium to long range.

For other 'Mech chassis, there are specific weapons you could choose to maximise your kill assists, which earn a healthy 6,500 CBills each in Assault. I would suggest an ERLL for extreme range and the ability to drag/waggle the beam over a distant target if you're a bad shot.

If you decide to go for kills and component damage, then something heavy and punchy, like the Gauss, (ER)PPC or AC20 is preferred.

Use a light (spider is ok), try to hit every enemy mech at least once
Using tag and narc also help... Hero help a lot.

Another very good strategy (but boring) is take a mech, run to the enemy and do as much damage as you can hitting as much mechs as you can, die soon, exit the game, take another mech and repeat

the biggest money grabber for me as of late, and really for awhile now, but especially as of late, is TAG. so long as your team has 2-3 mechs with LRMs or even SSRMs you can get the TAG bonus around 7-12 times. Tonight I had 17 and it was LRMs so I got an additional spotting assist of 17 as well. no premium time. no hero mech. I made 120,00-170,000 a few times tonight. I also racked up decent damage with an ERPPC on my Kintaro. any fast mech will do, and you'd be best off with long range weapons and ECM so you can keep things locked w/o dying. if you have friends, tell them to bring LRMs, and call targets.

I can get up to 265k c-bills in Atlas DDC. It's slow but it's a good thing because by the time you get to the main battle most of enemies are weaken by others.

Just to clarify, that's a kill when you get someone who was base or cap point capping something you own very reciently.

If you're staying Free to Play, no mech is better than any other, it boils down to which mech you can pilot well.

Pick a mech type that best suits your playstyle, ie; Direct Fire Brawlers, Ambush/Skirmisher Brawlers, Long Range and Snipers, LRM's. etc. Stay alive, don't Rambo over the hill, hit as many mechs as you can, and be alert for targets your team mates are focusing on.

OR:

You can pay real cash for a hero mech.

I own a Heavy Metal. I have a Gauss, two LRM-15s with Artemis and three medium lasers on it. It's heat efficient. As fast and maneuverable as most assaults with it's XL330 and two jump jets. You can kill secure (kill steal) with the LRMs and Gauss at range and protect yourself up close while generating assists with the trey mediums. It's running full armor for longevity. The modules I run are Advanced Seismic, Advanced Sensors and Advanced Target Decay. This is good because you are not wasting on consumables, get info to stay alive like where to be or not to be, and they help your LRMs (you don't spam just use them at 200-500 meters to generate damage and kill open 'Mechs or components). The hero 'Mech bonus is very nice. I don't generate the amount of damage or kills if I run a meta Cataphract 3D or Dragon Slayer, but I'm still getting 700 plus damage games with plenty of kills and assists, while avoiding the coolant flush cbill burn, which nets me more cbills in the end. Running in a four man lance with pilots that are good is definitely a bonus. Getting the W is extra cbills and a good team nets you more assists and kill secures.

When I want to farm c-bills, it's hero mech (any, preferably one with energy and missile), TAG, LRM5 (or more), Large Lasers, MG's and med lasers are all amazing for c-bills.

The main goal is to touch EVERYTHING on the map if possible (or as much as you can). Then stay with the group and try to kill whatever THEY are killing... as long as you keep damage into it (MG, med lasers ,etc) you can rack up the savior assists which really help.

Use the laser to sweep across a bunch of enemy mechs with one shot. Assists on all of them if they die. TAG anything you can. Also, you can post-tag... watch for an enemy that is already getting LRM'ed and toss a quick tag on it as missiles are incoming. Grats on TAG money. Pop a LRM 5 or whatever at anything you can get a lock on. Biggest thing is don't blindly charge in... you need to stay alive. It's not worth getting that one kill and ending at 1 kill, 3 assists when you could have a whole match of good team support, get 9-10 assists and a bunch of spotting assists.

Oh... and one of the biggest things... RED BOX YOUR TARGET! I move around through a lot of people when spectating and I notice TONS of people not targeting what they are hitting. Make it a mantra "I must ACTUALLY target my target". All of us have gotten into fights where we just shoot the mech in front of us because there is no time to properly target it, but I see people fighting for 10+ seconds and never red box what they are shooting at. Hit the stupid R key. You won't get the c-bills as fast if you don't.
