I've only just touched my Cicadas for the first time in ~ 9 months, and was wondering when the conventional wisdom on it's engine size changed: I remember they all had 300s, in the name of heat sinks, back then …

Generally, I think that's the conventional wisdom. It's a sweet spot for speed/available weapon tonnage.
That said, a couple of mine run hotter engines. Notably, my X-5 runs a 320. Considering that's the only one I actually ever drive besides the 300-running 3M, I suppose it's all that matters.

Good question. I'm looking at Sarna, they are all listed to have the 300 engine.
But Smurfy says all most of them have 320 engines in MWO....
Also funny is this one.
The -3C Cicada is an attempt to allow the 'Mech to have a much greater reach with devastating results. To do this, the maximum speed has been reduced to 118.8 kph and the Medium Lasers have been replaced with two Machine Guns and the Small Laser has been replaced with a PPC.
But that speed isn't possible. It'd be between a 290 and a 295 engine rating to get there with MWO. The 3C has a 280 engine, meaning it got some serious speed cuts...
The 2A is listed on Sarna as having a 300 engine and 129.6 km/h speed.
MWO has the 2A with a 320 engine and 129.6 km/h as it's speed. The change was clearly to deal with some sort of speed bork in the math for engine to speed ratio...
Which was done probably to slow the Cicada down...
which was done...why?
Good find!

But a 300 engine it's supposed to go 129.6 km/h.
So at a 300 it'd go the same speed as MWO's 320 allows it to go.....
Something's off here.

You can get 'Mechs to Sarna-compliant speeds after tweaking them.
Atlai should walk at 54 kph stock as an example, but as a matter of fact they only reach that speed with a 300 rated engine only after speed tweak is unlocked.

MWO seems to have borrowed MW3's formula for calculating speeds, since that was the other game where you could pick "whatever" engine rating instead of being limited to multiples of the mech's tonnage, which is the case in tabletop and MW2. Basically, tabletop run speed doesn't increase linearly with rating, and MW3's formula makes a lin., The end result is as described above: Mr. Atlas is a sad panda. (edit: grammar)
