If I get the chance today, I'll have a writeup of how much a "newbie" will have to spend to grind out the "cheapest" of all mechs... the Hunchback.

The math could surprise you.

That's not the case... Clan Mechs have "alternate configs", so something like the infamous Madcat/Timber Wolf had a very popular stock build in the Madcat-D (2 Clan ERPPC + 4 Clan SSRM6).

Even the Thor/Summoner had a very popular variant in the Thor-C (UAC20s anyone?).

This is unavoidable.

Well clan mechs do have "variants" but not in the way that inner sphere ones do. Clan mechs are called OmniMechs because their hardpoints/components are interchangeable. So if PGI holds true to this we will only have 1 variant of a clan mech but will have to spend c-bills every time we decide to change a MadCats/Timberwolfs arm hardpoints from energy to ballistic for example. But knowing PGI they'll just use the lazy and poorly thought out "buy 3 madcats to master one" and maybe hide some ghost mechanic behind it with "advanced math" that makes no sense. We shall see in a couple years. :D

I hadn't even really thought about it but what you mention in regards to how the might do clan mech hardpoints is really interesting. Basically, you by the starting configuration you want, then have to spend money to switch up the hard points. The only concern would be what type of money, C-bills or MC.

Yes, it looks like a long grind, and im sure it is for new ppl. However, even if you sell the mech it still counts. So once you break the barrier of 3 elite done for a weight class, that class is gold/mastered. After you basic any other new mech in that class can go straight to the top/master.

edit: old mechs are good also!
