I read that locust is supposed to have a max engine of 280 rather than 170, allowing it to run at 226 km speed and going up to 302km with MASC.

I also learned that the game engine can't handle speeds higher than 155kmph.
And according to this it is a priority development to add support for higher speeds, and MASC.

So i was wondering, is it planned to allow the locust to go as fast as it is supposed to be capable of lore-wise when the engine can handle it or is it not gonna happen?

Quoting sarna:
LCT-6M - The newest variant of the Locust, the 6M used a massive 280 Hermes XL Engine to propel it to an astounding speed of 226.8 km/h and was capable of bursts of speed reaching 302.4 km/h through a MASC system. The 6M used a Small Cockpit to save weight with the side effect of making the 'Mech harder to pilot and utilized Ferro-Fibrous armor to get the most of the light armor the 'Mech carried. It was armed with two Magna Mk VI ER Medium Lasers, which were backed up by a single Magna Mk IV ER Small Laser. The -6M was produced by Corean Enterprises on Stewart.

I put that forward in an ATD, they they said :

Question from Mcgral18 : What is the target max speed in the future, after hit registration is fixed?

The 20 tonners will likely need more speed than the other lights to survive, although, without engine limitations, its possible to build a locust to go over 260 KMh with speed tweak ((16.2*295)/20)*1.1)=262 while still having a Small Laser.

Do you expect mechs to be able to go that speed in the future of MWO? Will it be capped closer to the 180-200 mark, or the current 152?

Answer from David: Unfortunately, I can't give you any exact numbers right now because we don't have any. The chief limitation is going to be technological; if the network traffic or other aspect of the game can't handle Mechs going above a certain speed, then that's going to be a hard cap that we can't go over.

Another thing to keep in mind is that we'd eventually like to introduce MASC into the game. MASC, if we followed the tabletop numbers, is basically an upgrade that would allow Mechs to temporarily sprint 33% faster than normal, at the risk of damaging their legs. So our speed cap would need to be the maximum MASC-enhanced speed, with Mechs normally running slower than that.

And, of course, there's always gameplay concerns. While I'm fairly sure that light Mechs will be able to eventually run faster, I'm also sure that there's likely a speed at which their no fun to play against and possibly even no fun to play as. So there's going to need to be some exploration on our end to find the balance.

I know BT is fantasy and all but the idea of a 20 ton machine going the same speed as an F1 car really, really stretches my realms of plausibility. Everything so far I can sorta pass off but there is a red line for some things.

My guess MASC will have terrible rolling dice mechanics instead of making it simply overheat the Mech fast like in MW4 and MW:LL. And staying in 80-100% while "mascing" simple breaks the MASC, giving the player a choice to try and push it to the limit before it actually has a chance of breaking.

Imagine if it was the opposite programming where one is using a Flea and just after 0.5 seconds (under 80-100% heat) after MASC engages, the game rolls some virtual dice, and your MASC stops working - and that AC/20 blast you were going to dodge, kills you in one hit.

Anyways 302 km/h is fast for that specific Locust variant, there are other fast Mechs too:

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Piranha (20 tons, huge array of weaponry, 151 km/h)
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Dasher (20 tons, up to 216 km/h with MASC)
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Porcupine (20 tons, up to 194 with MASC)

And with PGI's way of handling variants, I doubt they will increase the max engine to 280 for the Locust until they actually introduce that specific variant in the game, which also requires the weight saving 'small cockpit' as well.
