Let's look at some options:
1) Radar/Mini map
This option doesn't seem to help me much when a teammate has meandered up behind me to the point that our icons on the map are overlapping.
2) A Rear Facing Camera
This option has already been discussed (for other reasons) and the developers basically responded to say 'no it can't be done with this engine at this time'. OK Fair enough.
3) Utilize one of the cockpit monitors to display a 'backup/reversing sensor'.
Ah yes the soccer mom/dad's best friend; This little beauty lets you get a quick visual indication that you're getting too close to an obstacle while in reverse. Shouldn't* require a major overhaul to the game engine and won't clutter up the mini map with additional information.

What I personally like about this option:
a) it's something visually simple that's quick to reference and not very distracting.
b ) it only ever turns on when your mech is in reverse
c) it can be implemented as a module add on so if you don't like it you don't use it.
d) it finally puts that cockpit monitor to use!
Anyway this is probably just a dumb idea and I pretty much expect it won't garner much attention but just thought I'd throw it out there. And in any case if this is a stupid idea I'll just blame it on alcohol
