Good shot. Right in the heart.

This just in, civil display via intended game design suppressed.

How's it being suppressed exactly?

Also, not sure that this should be in the "In The News" forum, probably more appropriate for the FanSite jumpship or similar.

While I don't disagree with the aims of the protest, wouldn't it have just tanked the matchmaking servers? I mean...it's pretty likely that they would have just had to taken them offline for a few minutes after the sync drop happened to fix it, is it really surprising that Garth would plan to deal with it proactively?

This isn't like an MMO where you can go sit somewhere in a persistent part of the game world.

Servers being down for several minutes exactly overlapping a major community demonstration, with no PGI 'announcement' aimed at what's going on or explaining why? That's like closing the road a march is planned on for just the day of the march... for otherwise no reason.

If everyone who's incredibly disgruntled launching at once crashes the servers... isn't... that... a sign?

Source on the servers having to be down then? Judging by the timer that is still at the website it would not conflict with any scheduled maintenance or sale offerings.

As to the crashing of the server, while I have no doubt that there has been a large response to the initiative (I have seen a number of folks with the signature as well) I am suspect that it would negatively impact the servers in that manner.

I'm not saying it's not, but given that they haven't walked anything back and pretty obviously have no intention of doing so, how could anyone even pretend to be surprised that they'd be making preparations to deal with the event? What did they expect, that PGI would just sit on their hands and wait for them to crash the servers?

I have received, in the last 24 hours, information from several sources that Garth Erlam, our “community manager” is pushing "Fox the network guy" to shut the MWO servers down for 2 minutes upon the expiry of the UniteAndDrop website timer.

If every protester rage quit when the schedule was thrown off....
While i agree with alot of the sentiments of the plan, it is in a basic form a ddos attck and i can understand why PGI would take measures to protect the servers.

This excuse sounds like complete BS. You completely dismantle the entire event because of some unnamed source citing a community manager's alleged comment about maybe bringing down the server for two minutes.

Let's be honest for a second. Even among those who are dissatisfied with the game's direction, there was a growing criticism about this event and what it would accomplish. Many people believed that it would have the opposite effect and PGI would see the uptick in player population as a positive.

If you really wanted to prove PGI doesn't want to listen, you would have run the event as is. If the servers had gone down it would have been the biggest proof you could have ever hoped for. Instead you concocted a way to weasel out of a poorly thought out protest.

I don't buy it.

I wasn't going to be apart of the movement because I felt like PGI would just turn around and announce "Record numbers of returning users" the following week. Thus I stayed clear.

I think the abort was on their end, and I have to admit, as much as PGI continues to frustrate me in a lot of ways (Ghost Heat must die), this whole thing doesn't sit right. If Garth wanted to shut down the servers before the protest, he'd done so quietly, and not involved "Tim the network guy" or whatever until then. Likewise, the protest could have just been ninja-moved to an hour later or an hour before.

Believe me, I'm not here trying to talk down the goals of the thing, but I doubt the reasons for the abort.

Since these "sources" are uncited, and would imply knowledge very difficult to obtain, I'm going to assume they're false.

Honestly, the servers would have been fine. There are several weekly player-run events that do very large and coordinated drops into pug matches and the match maker handles it just fine. We're talking 50-100+ people all hitting launch simultaneously on top of the normal drop traffic. I seriously doubt it would have been more than 100 people taking part in this event.

And that number is probably why we have cancellation. But rumors of nefarious doings by PGI make a better story. :)

We have a thread for this movement in Fan Site / Jumpship.
http://mwomercs.com/...dropcom/unread/

No need to discuss this in two places.

See my post there of what I think about the latest message.
