I stand corrected (and embarrassed), I completely ignored the XL engine
Strike the CASE, which removed the need for an additional critical which mostly removes the need for the build I posted as the original build is quite solid (except for moving more Gauss ammo to the RT to reduce changes of the Gauss riffle being critted and I'd move more torso armor fwd)
I rarely go for the leg (unless already damaged) and rarely get legged myself and find the risk of ammo in the legs acceptable (no league play). When encountering this variant, based on the weapon stats in-game I would not target any leg but the right torso (when able). For long-range shots the legs are often concealed by scenery as well.
I agree the legs are much easier to damage than the cockpit and that the chances of loosing the cockpit armor are small (though twin Gauss mechs often work). Still, I find loosing the cockpit armor and fatal exploding ammo in the cockpit more annoying than the occasional ammo explosion to the leg which leaves the mech legged only. AMS ammo doesn't expend itself as quickly as other ammo types and can remain in the cockpit for the entire match. For ballistic mechs I also store ammo in the cockpit---when I have few places left---knowing that it is spent quickly.
