While it may not seem important, the “R” key (or target lock key) is essential to becoming a better mechwarrior. I’ve seen lots of folks (some of them obviously not new to the game) running around shooting targets all over the map and never taking that half a second to tap “R”.
What this does, is locks your computer onto a target. This in turn puts a red box around said target and allows your team mates to also lock onto this target. Not only that, it allows you to gather info about the locked target. While it is essential for missile boats it is NOT solely for them.
Let’s go through some of the benefits.
  • While I don’t recommend blind firing at targets, that red box around a locked target gives you a pretty good idea of where the mech is. When shooting through trees and other things that obstruct your view you can often get a hit on a mech by simply aiming for the middle of that red box. Again – be careful when doing this that none of your team mates are between you and the target.
  • It allows your team to also target the mech. This will allow LRM boats to attack these targets. Not only do the LRMs damage the mech, it has the added bonus of sending pilots running for cover. When mech’s are trying to get under cover they often forget about firing at you, letting you get in a few free shots at them.
  • It allows you to gather good info about a mech. After you have been locked on a target for a bit you get a little “paperdoll” of that mech on your HUD. That gives you what weapons it has. If you see an AC20 (or 2) you know not to get within brawling range of this mech. Beyond just weapon load outs you will also see colors that indicate how much armor is left on a specific spot. If you look at that then you know which leg is about to come off or if their back center torso armor is almost gone. Very useful info for getting kills, especially when you start to learn which mechs often run XL engines.
  • This can also be a good way to get your team mates to move in your direction, or at least in the direction of the targeted mech. When a red target icon pops up on their HUDs there is a good chance they will head towards it to get into the fight.
  • I’ve also seen some scouts use the “R” key to rapidly cycle through targets. Basically you keep hitting it, targeting the group of mechs in an area and if your team mates are on the ball, they will notice this on their HUD and come to help out. It’s not quite as good as actually typing out locations but it works in a pinch if you have to get away before typing up that info.

So please please please use that R key.

I know you have good intentions but I'm getting kinda tired of coming on to the new player forum to help out new players and nearly every thread is a founder telling new players how they should play, this is the 3rd "Please press R" thread this week, they should just have a big guide instead of all these threads randomly spread out in this forum.

I find the R button is to close to the "chat all" or T button and often find myself wondering why the chat now has rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in it.

Ok I might have read this wrong but having founders come in here giving advice to new players is sort of the point of the forum?

You can rebind most of the shortcuts to whatever you like. I put targeting on Q.

Yeah give advice as in when a new player asks a question or creates a thread, go help him; not: clutter up the front page with the same thread over and over, preaching to an invisible audience to farm "likes" from other veterans.

Again, good intentions here, but this is the 3rd "please lock on new players" thread in the past day.

Most people need to read something at least seven times before it actually registers. In the case of pilots not locking targets it's probably more like 700 times. :)

That's more a symptom of rampant in-game stupidity, rather than some innate desire to spam threads in the guides forum. I notice that when I'm observing in-game, there are still tons of players who don't hit R, and it irritates me greatly, because it's so easy to do, and so helpful to both you and your teammates to do so.

If you tell people in game, especially when observing, they either ignore you or tell you to shut up because dead players shouldn't give advice. You know...the player who is dead because they were actually fighting the enemy while the defective intellect who can't even hit R was hiding behind rocks or executing some elite flanking maneuver way out on the edge of the map in his 60kph Awesome.

Yet all of them have failed to point out this... Target Info is pre-filled for targets that others have locked and scanned first. Your scout can actually give you significant warning of the AC40 Jag.

Aside from that Haruko... your posts on this subject are useful forms of bandwidth? Hmmmm... maybe you could have just not posted thereby contributing to the wasted space.

Thanks for not posting in the future o/

Are you for REAL? This IS New Player Help.

So stop coming here then. This is a BIG problem in the game at the moment.

Yes, "THEY" should have a guide.. they don't .... so now what? Do we beat our little fists on the desk now? Is that ok with you?

Hit R guys. It's an important part of the game, for all the reasons listed above. The more this issue is addressed, the more people that will start using Target Lock.

Was just in a game with my Atlas D. Catapult fires into a canyon, then backs up. I peek out and there are six people there shooting back. How many did the Catapult bother to target while he was 1) shooting, and 2) disengaging? If you guessed zero, you win!

I seriously considering just shooting him after losing most of my front torso and arm armor twisting my way back from the edge, but i gave him mercy. Next time someone does that kind of stupid stuff though, I'm just going to blast them and hope I get the team kill.

I guess now is the time to point out the "R" Lock... Repeating Alert thingy!

When you faceplant into the middle of the previously unknown pack of enemy mechs... while you are busy exploding... Press and Hold the "R"/Lock key to generate that annoying... beep beep beep beep. This alerts everyone that you have found something exciting!

Oh yes, me with my huge count of 18 posts. I'm obviously fishing for likes. Or, I don't know, maybe I'm trying to address an issue I'm seeing in the game. Is it the 3rd post in the day or the week? When I did a search on "Target Lock" and another on "R key" what I got was a few posts in GENERAL that were snarky, sarcastic and gave little info about why target locking is a good idea.

Since they don't have a single big "beginners guide" post where this could have lived, I decided to help some new folks out. You know, doing what is supposed to be done in this forum. Thanks for bumping the thread with your useless comment though.

I posted about this once before too.
But it can't be repeated too many times Target!
