So I've been thinking.

There are numberous posts on the forums that state, without a hint of reservation that:

Most medium mechs are trash

Lights are only as good as their bugged hitboxes allow them to be.

Dragons are horrible mechs and Catabults are ok except the salker can do its job of fire support so much better.

Assault mechs are the only thing that really matters.

Cataphracts are ok as fire support but are pretty light.

Now I'm not saying these statments are true but it apprears that at least half of the population takes them as at least partial truths.

Now look at what is in drops currently:

4 to 6- assaults

3 to 5 heavies

2 to 3 mediums

1 to 3 lights.

These are heavy lances. Averaging 75 tons mostly. Sometimes more and if less its usually a roll.

So what happens when PGI brings in tonnage limits?

What happens to all the people who think the cataphract is on the light side and stalkers and highlanders are the go to mech of the game when tonnage limits force the numbers down to 1 to 3 assault and 2 to 4 heavies?

The example of tonnage limits given in ATD 45 would put the average down to 60. 60! (yes I know those are test numbers and it could be anything, but I doubt it will be higher than 65)

How could this work? Would most of the people pugging in their atlases and stalkers have several match maker fails before being allowed in?

How will the two guys who team up in their highlanders manage when the drop limit is 130 tons and if one wants a highlander the other has to pilot a Cicada or lighter? Is this fair for them since they lose out on the way they like to play.

How many will ragequit?

Will the forums light up in flames of quit storms as PGI blocks overweighted lances and people are no longer allowed to drop in the mechs they leaked blood sweat and tears for?

Does anyone else see this as the doom storm I see it becoming?

For the record, my heaviest mech in my mechbay is 50 tons so I'm not really worried about tonnage limits. infact I embrace them--

But for the folks who see my centurion as lightweight trash..... how are they going to work with tonnage limits?

Just a question. Not trolling, just concerned how many will be blind sided by this.

Meds will still be mediocre/subpar in general, but you will _have_ to play them just like everybody else, so
the few assaults that do get in a match will have a great time LOL.

Expect to see lots of brawler Hunchies, Cents, some sniper and or AC20 Blackjacks, Trebuchets/Kintaro as LRM boats, the usual ECM Cicadas.
Maybe the Phoenix/Sabre (the "hero" and the standards as well) mediums won't be DOA due to scaling/hitbox issues. Maybe they will be DOA. The good ones will be used a lot. The "hero" Phoenix medium variants aren't so thrilling, but we will see.
Builds: AC20, LL, ML, SRM, some LRM support in that order.
I think it will be fun.

I know it's not going to happen, but I'm really hoping for game lobbies. You know, like every other game ever made has? Have a random pick order and fill slots.

Honestly I'm pretty sure It's going to eliminate heavies and mediums completely. Jenners and Stalkers from here on out, folks.

Per Bryan via the NGNG podcast 88, there will be pre-match lobbies. You will Launch, then be matched and go to a lobby. There you will have the ability to select 1 of 4 Mechs that you have already pre-selected, and choose the map. Add in tonnage balance (the lobby system will have you select 4 Mechs of the same tonnage) and you get a decent matchmaking setup hopefully.

Not sure why I would be excited for this. I have to own 4 mechs of the same tonnage to play the lobby mode? Sounds like another "lol buy more mech bays and mechs!!" in addition to the 3 mechs requirement to master a chassis.

Also, where's the dropship mode in which you have 4 mechs and respawns? Did their position change again?

Dropship mode was discontinued/placed on the back burner a few months ago. Didn't sound like you had to have four Mechs of the same tonnage to play at all, just gives you the option to have multiple variants with different loadouts if you wanted. If you choose to just take one Mech, that's your choice.

Example-
You have three variants of the Atlas, one Hunchback, three Centurions, and two Jenners. In your dropship you could either have three Atlas (putting you in the 100 ton limit), all four Mediums (all are 50 ton, putting you in that bracket), or two Jenners (35 ton bracket). Depending on both your Elo and tonnage, you will be matched with eleven other teammates against another twelve pilots. Then you will go to a pre-match lobby, where you will vote on the map you will play on and then you can choose which Mech variant you wish to use.

Of course they want you to buy more Mechs/Mechbays- this is their business and they want to make money.

Agreed. What a joke. I barely own any mechs of the same tonnage... Oh, but I guess I should run out, buy more mechbays and mechs just so I can launch in the future, even if I have no interest in a hanger full of nearly identical mechs... Right. At least the new tonnage limits will make it nearly impossible for me to play games with my friends since most everyone plays assault mechs, for obvious reasons.

Unreal... Oh, the dropship mode was eliminated in favor of other great things, like 3vp.
