really trying to find the sweet spot with the orion hero mech, I haven't done TOO much tinkering around yet as I'm busy farming the cbills to actually play around with the thing and get a feel for how it moves, but this is what I'm looking at so far.

my biggest concern is that the side torsos may be too large to make running an XL engine worthwhile. Any one else been testing this thing and have some input?

I have not yet had the sides blown off in my first five deaths. I am going to run the biggest XL I can fit.

I'm curious on the Torso hitboxes as well. With an XL, you can get Victor like speed with room for all kinds of fun loadouts. With a stock, if the torso hitboxes are good, you could have something as durable as a Heavily Armored Cent.

feels like the thing dies instantly to any kind of small arms fire, I have only had 2 good games in it and thats because I was ignored, I was literally cored in 3 LL blasts last match

Glad to see there's nothing about the Orion on the front page...serves me right for thinking they would announce it there too. Heck, they could have mentioned it in the September CDU instead of telling us everything that happened in August. Well, I'm glad to see that the Orion's in-game, and now I'm off to go read the patch notes.

I'm seeing this too, I get internal damage on the first or second mls round to the CT.

It's a coffin mech.

It has a center torso that can be hit with a peashooter from orbit, and goes down faster then a clanner on the first date.
If you do run one, an XL engine is a must. Of all the times I died, And as of about a month ago all I do is die, I have never gone down due to side torso breach.

Do yourself a favor: Get a victor instead. Same hardpoints, better hit boxes, and jumpjets. The Orion makes the Awesome seem hearty.

Im running a 255 Standard, cause the handy Ac/20 dosnt allow an XL.

But yes, most deaths were from CT coring, so an XL is proably viable.

Yeah the CT is such a huge target on this mech, someone mentioned that one could try to torso twist more. I'm not gonna pretend that I am very good at it, amd it does feel kinda slow without times two basic bonus available atm. Maybe someone more skilled can try it and give some feedback about twisting. Personally I've started rolling with a XL360 engine and found it to be life saving. Feel alot safer fighting assault mechs now.

Took a look at my old awesome 9M I had mastered before (haven't used it in awhile now), and they're almost equally fast, have similar loadouts and handle similarly. The difference is the 9M has more energy slots vs the protectors ballistic.

If the CT is so huge, then evidently, the STs gotta be small. Hence running an XL would be advisable. I would be strongly disappointed, if the Orion performs poorly. In the days of BattleTech the Orion was an absolute staple in any formation. One of the best of the best performing mechs. It was considered so good, that our game master forbid us to use one.

Any chance that dev's would fix hitboxes on CT?

Open up the mechlab and mouse over the angled side of the CT, you will notice that the ST lights up. I think the devs did the same thing as with the Kintaro and include that angled side to the ST. CT is still huge though so it's not hard to miss if you shoot one head on.

Tossed in an XL360 and yes it can run. And with that speed comes better twist which is heavily needed (most weapons are torso mounted). No AC20 with XL, but LBX and SRM6s are a good combo.

Torso twisting can help, but it can also hinder. I was doing a bunch of that at one point yesterday, and although I was able to absorb fire deliberately on a ST, the tradeoff was that I'm now charging into battle sideways. Can't really see what's coming, and you end up taking more total damage since you're spending more time taking fire, instead of giving fire.
I discovered that it's rear hit boxes, however, are dead even, and spread fire between left, center, and right perfectly. You can take a real beating, if you turn your back and run. Weird, no?

Ultimately, I ended putting an XL360 in mine, with two ER large lasers, AC10, SRM4, and AMS. It moved faster and lived longer.
No exactly a great build, will be working on it, but yeah, if you've got your heart set on an Orion, build the whole config around an XL360.

Yeah - seems like this is an "advanced" mech: so one where the pilot is really good at torso twisting away the worst of the damage. But come on, people: I know this is Kerensky's mech, but it's still only 75 tons. It can pack a punch, but it's not an Atlas - quit using it as one.

I didn't have a problem with it...granted I haven't died yet in one with two matches only under my belt with the Protector. The CT did get hurt pretty bad when I got to brawling, good thing I pack a punch.

PROTECTOR

both matches with this build were 500+ dmg. Was pretty happy with that.

I did die once because of the side torso blown out while using the 360XL. I believe the cataphract went after my left torso where the missile rack was supposed to be. I was from 100% untouched to 5 seconds later dead. I think I last a bit longer if he would aim for my center torso. With most people going with the XL on the Orion, I think it's only matter of time before someone only aim for the missile rack.

Thank you Lennex, the very first match, 500 damage on the desert world :D Combined the ERLL and 2 xUAC5's and the rest of the weapons on 2 for when things got close.
