I'll still have almost 2 million cbills in change after I build this, just finished my 25 cadet matches.

Pretty solid builds. I'd move that ammo down into your legs, though, to get it out of the way. In a Cataphract people will be shooting your torsos as a priority and you don't want to be mid-brawl and go up like a firework display. It's going to take a fair old while to grind up the cash for the second one though, if you want both!

I would say this, though - choose one over the other. Having multiples of the same variant doesn't help you in the long run and you can always swap out the loadouts according to mood :)

Also, welcome to the game!

Thanks! I figured with an XL engine, that ammo deflects from my engine slots, and either way, I'm dead, lol!

So I'm tossed up between the ranged 3D build, and that sweet, fast Kintaro, light hunter!

I very may well just build this....fast enough, looks like fun. KTO-20

Oh man, I'm pretty much an exclusive Medium pilot, and the Kintaro is just beastly with the right load. I got an XL300, 3ML and 4SRM6 in my 19 and it comes out with a 63-point alpha. Leaving the missile door closed avoids the heat scale penalty nicely. I've seen some nasty LRM builds for it, too, and the KTO-18 with nothing but Streaks and pulse lasers is a scout's nightmare.

Feel free to PM me if you've any more questions! I'm sure plenty of people will add to this thread and help out too. It's a pretty busy part of the forums :)

Are you using the 280xl because thats the only xl you got? By dropping the heatsinks and adding endo, you can pump up your engine rating to 325xl and put 3 dhs inside of it.

It take 3 engine crit hits to kill you. It only takes one crit hit on ammo to take out the entire location it's stored in. You have a slightly better chance of surviving for a few seconds more if you keep your ammo explosions out of your engine spaces.

I love your suggestions! Thing is, I've discovered I'm a brawler at heart, and was told this Highlander would suit me....thing is, I have just near 15 million cbills.

I thought of making a Victor like this mech, but the cost of a huge XL engine to do it justice, woul cost more than I have for now.

***EDIT:

After smurfy shopping, I can just barely afford THIS brawler....I know it has an XL, but I hear Victor's do okay with those.

Solid to brawl?

If you drop 3 of your heat sinks and 7 points of armour from each leg you can add in Endo-Steel and upgrade the engine to an XL 325. You can then put 3 heat sinks back in to the engine. Net result you'll be down 1 heat sink, but have gone from a 280 to a 325 which will bump your speed up to 75.2 kph (or 82.7 kph with tweak).

That's a pretty expensive upgrade though.

Another point though, if you move the large lasers to the arms you'll have more range of motion for aiming them.

Hey Doc,

Glad you're into this game!

There's a couple of principles I think would help you understand better how to build your favourite mech.

Firstly, remember than an XL engine fills 3 torso slots - CT RT LT - and that means when any of these 3 torsos are destroyed - you are destroyed! Thus, an XL engine allows you to carry more weapons, move faster at the expense of durability.

Secondly, the weapons you listed were primarily medium to short range weapons with 2 large lasers which are medium to long range (and at short range, they can run hot). What I therefore see is a mixed bag loadout with a fragile engine.

What do you intend to do?

Multi-role mechs rarely excel at each role...

If you want to brawl and play medium to close range, I suggest a standard engine... If you intend to damage from afar, then an XL engine may be worthwhile, but then you'll need to choose the weapons that will allow you to do this.
