It's all fine and dandy when you are playing a TT game or Starcraft (Zerg vs Protoss was also mentioned) because it's just you, using a large number of crappy units against a small number of much better ones, because you are The General, you stand back on the hill, watch your units get slaughtered until the enemy runs out of units to do the slaughtering. Now, imagine if Starcraft was a first person simulator and you had to be one of the zerg units. BAM (or ZAP), you just died in 2 seconds, but hey! there are 3 thousand more like you so your team can win in the end. Do I need to tell you how appealing this kind of game would be? Contrary to that, I wouldn't mind losing the match if I was playing a super Protoss unit and got 50 zerg kills before i died, guess which is more fun!
People play games to get a feeling of accomplishment, if i get cored and die in 20 seconds from some dual UAC10 or whatever and it keeps happening over and over and over again, I sure won't feel proud just because the end-game screen said "Victory - All enemy mechs destroyed".
I think PGI are safe in making clan mechs more or less the same as IS ones, on one hand the Battletech veterans will drool over them and throw money again because of nostalgia, on the other hand the players who don't know about Battletech will play them like choosing between any other faction, it will be just a matter of aesthetics and the coolest-sounding Clan name.
