I'll stick one on anything that goes slower than 60kph.
However, I pilot mostly medium so that situation is rare.

This. The slower and bulkier my mech the more likely I use AMS.
But there are exeptions. My PPC Centurion ( still experimenting with that variant.. was 3 LL before.. who knows what it will be next week :) ) got none because he is cover humping anyway, and ams would mean one less DHS.
But my SRM centurion, going about 30kph faster then the PPC one, got it because to get into effective range I often need to cross open ground.

I never use AMS.

1) If my mech is fast, I can duck into cover before the missiles hit me.
2) if my mech is slow, I rarely leave cover anyway, because walking into the open is a death sentence for slow mechs.

Except for my D-DC, always. It's effectively 1.5 tons of armor for both you and nearby allies. You can play smart and avoid a lot of missile damage, but there will always be times when you (or your allies) can't avoid it. It's particularly important if you're a short range mech because you often can't just break lock once you get into the thick of things. On top of that, it mitigates some SRM damage. Long range sniper classes or ECM mechs are probably the only categories I would feel comfortable dropping AMS.

Whenever I see a teammate get lit up by the incoming LRM icon, I will move in close to reduce the damage for him. One ton of ammo is good for 99% of games, so it's no big deal if most of it wastes away.

In a game where there is no healing and no respawn, survivability is paramount.

I try to fit it on my mechs as often as a I can, but when stretched for tonnage it is often something that will go first.
