I understand I am not allowed to post his name, so on behalf of all us newbies who screw up...I'm sorry!
Any advice on how to avoid doing it again would be appreciated.

Now being a team killer and trolling will not go well, but error's happen.
I'm sure you will triple check what mech you have targeted from now on.

If you do it in-match, you may give away your position to the enemy or accidentally hit a teamate. And trust me, it's way more embarrassing to friendly fire someone outside of combat than it is to hit them in combat. The latter is completely excusable; the former is not. Finally, those who test fire weapons in-game come of as either noobs or little kids who can't wait to see the pretty flash and hear the boom when they press the trigger.

There is one occasion, and one only, when I fire ranging rounds. And that's if I'm in a new mech on a hot map and want to watch my heat handling. If you do that, remember firearm safety.

You can message others with T, for talk to all (including the bad guys). Y, for talk to team (the blue guys and green guys). And U for talk to lancemate (the ugly green triangle guys).
Within a match^
And I wouldn't worry about a single shot in the heat of battle. People only get upset if you do it at the very start, with no enemies in proximity, and aim directly at them.

It was me, and your apology is accepted. No hard feelings at all. We all make mistakes from time to time. Now, back to the battlefield.

I just got out of a match where at the very beginning, before I had even taken a step, I received a couple medium lasers to my rear torso. Slowly I turned in my Atlas to find a lone Raven looking at me. Since it appeared he may be sitting still to allow me to shoot him back and even the score, I was winning the inner battle against the urge to pop him in the cockpit with a quick laser blast. Then he said in chat, "Sorry. Mouse was in another window." That's all I needed to hear. Therefore, instead of, "Douche wad! Take your adderall!" my response was a more understanding, "It happens. Thanks for owning it."
I find most people are understanding about it, as long as you apologize/own up to it.
