trial mechs really need an upgrade.. I have noticed a few have been better as of late... But you really need to make trail mechs worthy..

i realize that if you make them too good, perhaps that might lead to people never spending cash.. But really i think the customization, along with, coloring them you really don't have to worry about that...

Perhaps add a limit, so you can only use a mech 10-20 times.. or use a trail mech maybe, 50-100 times a month..

this would encourage people to try new mechs, but limit them so they would want to spend some money/credits to get it.

I've mentioned this in another post before but I'll repeat it here.
If trial mechs were customizable including basic camo coloring it would make trial mechs alot more 'trialable'. Simply have all the mods not saved and revert to stock configuration after a game. This should make it easier for new players and existing ones to try new things. Agree with putting a limit on the number of times a trial mech can be tried out could be a feasible option also.

I don't mind the trial mechs since they're just that, something to give a test ride in. It helped me choose my last two mechs anyway. I guess they could make it so you could mod your trial mechs with C-bills until they rotate out but would you want to waste your money that way?

Trial mechs are good when used properly, and can be very effective at doing their original jobs. It's just that certain trials suck as a basis and don't provide the new player with good tools (like probably all Spiders, the Blackjack with only flamers, etc.). The trials we have this month though are actually very powerful at their tasks. I agree that most need a boost or upgrade, but they are supposed to be replaced later on anyway. Looking at the trials (which I pilot as an additional grind because I'm cheap like that), Raven is good for scouting, though a bit specialized, Centurion is very friendly as a flanker and can effectively zombie and still kill, Quickdraw is good for assassination and jump popping in close combat, and Stalker is a powerful mech when backed up by smaller mechs. It can solo, but often times, mechs would get to the back.

Dude I think you deafened me with that one...

The biggest problem I have with the idea of making the trial mechs custumisable is that probably.... 70-80% (?) of the people I know would only ever mount 1 maybe 2 weapon systems (different weapons) on their mechs unless stuff like the trial mechs forced them to.

I.E. -they would go into it with the mindset of "only lasers are worth using, duh. AC are way heavy for the damage, and missiles either take a lock or have {Scrap} for range." ...then wonder why they get the {Scrap} beat out of them.

Now having said that I only personally know 1 other person who actually plays (Gwilliy) and 1 other that has made an account but his computer cannot currently run it (Xabidar) but that does not change the mindsets of the other people I know (as far as I know anyways. -who knows maybe playing this could completely rearrange the way their brains work.)

Upgraded trial mechs? That's what champions are!

Actually though, I've heard that once UI 2.0 is in and new players end up basically starting with a mech after tutorials that trial mechs will be phased out completely.

One reason they existed was as a fall back for repair and rearm since they didn't cost anything to repair. Since R&R has been removed, half the reason they exist has disappeared with it.

The problem with trial mechs are twofold:

1. There are outdated level 1 trial mechs, those things don't stand a chance against level 2 tech.
2. Stock builds are not optimized, this has to do with the technical limitations of their production lines. They won't work well in a game where min maxed custom designs are allowed.

Trial mechs are only going to be viable against other players in stock mechs, and even here I'd split them among a 3025/3039 and a 3050 group.

I think if there would be matches with more/only trial mechs the games would be easier for new players.
Also it could be an option to keep all the champion mechs as trials to increase the options for new players. That would not solve the tech1 problem, but is more like a workaround. :)
