Flamers currently rock... get a lance of mechs using 4 flamers each, set up two groups, one with all four, one with two. Then have a ballistic on standby. Lance uses flamers to isolate and shutdown the mech. Then ballistics to strip armor, everyone alphas, and guaranteed crit.

You may alternatively use a hunchie with all flamers to shutdown a mech from the flank while your firing line kills it.

Current favs:
1. Hunchie with 9 flamers
2. Blackjack with 8 flamers
3. Spider, 4 MGs, 1 flamer
4. Flame with 4 flamers and an LBX 10
5. Firebrand with six flamers and 2 UAC5's

Win!

Can we just say yes to all those things you just said?

Here, i made this easier. (Hint : a lance of anything against a single mech is going to be very easy in any case. In fact, you're probably just making this much more complicated with flamers and all that setup to isolate a single mech and etc.)

Try to think of a loadout that would fare well in a lance vs lance situation

Try it before you hate on it. Exception of course to snow maps.

You could do this before, and the flamer is still just a trolling weapon that hurts your team by you being useless.

Was in a match last night, with a 4 man that was running flamer builds. OP is incorrect as to what I saw happen. They flat out cost our team the match. 2 died quickly, the other 2 were freaking worthless, as they had no - real - damage dealing weapons. Not a single 1 of the 4, did over 50 damage. IMO that amounts to griefing the team you are with ...

Last night -- I think it was last night -- this Blackjack tried to do this to me. I think he only had 2 flamers, so he wasn't the "Team Griefer" that might happen.

I looked at it funny and blew it away with AC40.

Basically, yes, flamers do work, flamers do have a purpose, and can be useful. But it's a narrow range of usability -- you need to work in conjunction with at least one other friendly mech, and pick the correct target (usually, high energy builds).

Given the recent heat increases to PPC, energy boats aren't as common, so you end up fighting against missile and ballistic boats. Missile boats you might still get away with, but ballistic boats are more liable just to blow you away on general principle.

Is it worth the lulz? Sure, IMO. Is it worth gimping your team over? Not IMO. So pick a build that's relatively sane and compliment it with flamers if you want to "Flame On".

Gentlemen,

You simply fail to see the glory of the flamer and its OPness.

FLAME ON!!!

One time when Machine Guns were "OP" I killed a Cataphract with my 6xMG 2xFlamer MAXIMUM TROLLING build. The pilot had no idea what to do when being flamered because nobody does that and tried to shoot me w/ a hot weapon. That's... uh... the single time I've seen flamers be useful.

Edit: Interesting fact: the pic was capped "Rammstein lanza fuego" which I believe translates as "Rammstein lance fire!".

So yah..... I"m in my Atlas DDC and two Teammate Jenners running 2 Flamers a piece are circling me constantly when I"m fighting an enemy Assault... flaming both the ENEMY and ME at the SAME TIME.... I yelled at them to go somewhere else... and they actually did.... to another teammate that got killed because of it...

Its a TROLL weapon through and Though.... I give one verbal WARNING... and then I shoot my own teammates that do not comply...

Actually the current FOTM is ACs. People are heavily boating Ultras, 5s, or 2s. This is because the Gauss and ERPPCs have been ruined and are no longer as effective as those. But they will no doubt nerf these builds next. Flamers could be the next FOTM though if they get too much of a buff. Since PGI is totally clueless when it comes to balance; it should not surprise anyone if this occurs. First they will buff it, people will start using it, then it'll be on the PoS heat scale list.
