Basically Imperfect balance is Rock/Paper/Scissors, perfect balance is like chess.
Perfect balance is good and exciting at first but quickly dissolves into wrote strategy vs wrote strategy and demands true dedication and mastery at the highest to build a new and innovative strategy.
Imperfect balance is tricky and hard. I think the plan is something like Light > Assault > Heavy > Medium > Light.
Establishing these things without the "Light Mech Medium Laser" with a "+20% damage when applied to the rear armor of an Assault mech" is probably more difficult.
Also mechs have blearily interpreted roles on the battlefield even within a weight class.
We have scouts and brawlers and support of the LRM and sniper varieties.
But...
Stalkers conspire to give better support then Catapults and Catapults conspire to give better support then Trebuchets.
Yes there are staggering orders of difference between the mobility of those mechs so in an exceedingly large field they could offer fire support to...
Well to different area's of the field in the company of similarly mobile mechs...
My train of thought has derailed.
They should have sorted the mechs in the lances by speed and made the Conquest capture points require 3 mechs to trigger at all. At least then we'd know what we was supposed to do.
The staggering differences between the game we play and the game as it was designed.
Anyway.
How should the game be played and what has to done to the mechanics of the game to make people actually play the game that way.

Somewhere hidden in that rambling, incoherent post is a very good point that I agree with.

What's the current meta?
Because I struggle to find one since about a month.
EDIT: Great video up there!

This posts imbalance leads me to wonder if the author is balanced enough to talk about balance.

The meta-game was to take advantage of convergence, and put as much damage as possible on one section of the target mech. One way was to mount a Gauss rifle and 2 ER-PPCs. They both had a 4.0 sec cooldown, and when you fired them together they had a 35-point strike out past 600m.
Another solution was to build a Jagermech with dual AC/20s (a.k.a. the "Jagerbomb"...it superceded the dual AC/20 "BoomCat"). On the one had, damage dropped off (linearly) past 270m, but this combination was still doing half damage at 540m, so if a Jagerbomb had to trade shots past optimum range they usually decided "I ain't skerred" and would play sharpshooter. It was even more obnoxious if they had a seismic sensor and would wait somewhere and surprise you as you rounded a corner
By the time I caught on to the PPC/Gauss combination, I was late to the game, and was using it to counter Jagerbombs. It didn't feel overpowered...It felt like I was getting caught up!
Either of these combinations had a high probability of a one-shot crit against most body parts. Once I caught on, I got a lot of "component destroyed" bonuses and a lot of stolen kills.
About a month ago, the Jagerbomb was nerfed by a heat penalty...but not much, because I still see them. They may have to fire one cannon at a time now, but they're still pretty destructive.
As of now, PPCs got nerfed by a big increase in heat, Gauss rifles are now trickier to use, so the Gauss/PPC combination has almost disappeared from the field.
So...PPCs and Gauss were nerfed hard with the Sept 3rd patch, and something else was buffed slightly in the previous patch.
...I don't want to give it all away, but you can search for what was buffed in the August 26th patch.
