First, notice that those with that cpu are OC their system. Even a tad up to 3.6 to 3.8 will grain you some FPS.
As stated we need more information before we can help you.
CPU-Z to get motherboard info if you do not know what it is.
Taking the time to obtain monitoring software so that you can tell when you have gone far enough.
******************
But lets get back to basics.
When playing do you hear your fans rev up? MSI Afterburner is a good program to monitor temp/usage and to set fan usage.
Have you opened up the case and cleared out any dust build up on heatsinks?
System Control Panel, Power Options, set to Best Performance.
Nvidia Control Panel - set up a profile for MWO
Nvidia Control Panel/Manage 3D Settings /
Threaded Optimization: Auto by default but may need to set to On
Power Management Mode - Set to Prefer Maximum Performance

its not you, its the game, wait for dx11 that may help.why mess with your system when the problem isnt your system,if anything maybe dowload gpuz and see that its running at pcie2x16 or pcie3x16 i had read some cards might not be using their correct bandwith.

keep in mind, the FX series CPUs have a defective temperature sensor. on the lower side it shows tempereatures too low (even below room temperatre o0) and the highest temps are too hight.

So here's just another thread of FPs problems to throw on the fire.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
AMD Fx 6100 six core 3.3GHz
8gb ram
1 TB hard drive

Had the same set up, fps drops down to 8 in brawls. Changed the prozessor to a FX8350 (which has 4GHz), helped a lot.
Your bottleneck is the CPU, because it's only one core that is heavily used.
Most mainboards that can hold the FX6100 can also hold the FX8350, so if you want to update your system do not go for the graphic card.

Id bet that your 6100 will hit 4.0ghz, with a barely noticable voltage bump. Heat is the only downside to small overclock like that, heck I still have the phenom X2 555BE @ 4.21ghz. works like a charm 5 years later, there are always those people who pay for things that they can accomplish but don't, for fear of failure. I'd be willing to bet you could find a used monster-size aircooler for cheap to really push that 6100 into orbit. By than you could have learned a bit about OC and its nuances. MOAR POWR!!!!!

I heard that other processors function better with NVIDIA cards, true?

Downloaded CPU-Z
Motherboard- Gigabyte Techlonogy Co. Model M68MT-S2
And no I don't really notice my fans increase in use during gameplay.
I keep reading around that I should maybe update my BIOS but I also hear it can be dangerous and might cause a complete meltdown if done wrong at all.

Just make 100% sure you download the correct bios for your motherboard and use a good usb stick to perform the update with. And dont touch anything while your updating the bios. If the install gets interrupted then your screwed.

So I should downloaded the bios update to a reliable USB? Why not just to the computer itself?

There's just less risk involved when flashing with dos. Its better to avoid windows utilities.

the work around i have come up with for fps issues is simple, i go to my radeon control panel or i go to my nvidia control panel (as i also have a radeon hd 6800 and an nvidia 8800 gt 512 edition) and depending on which screen i am using for the game i will go to that control panel and i will tell it to override all game settings, which you can add the program usually, or just make it override period, and then set all the settings the way you know the card can handle it. this will kill shadows if you want, put anti aliasing and triple buffering where you want it, as well as any thing else you would like. i always do vertical sync and im pushing mad graphics with it now. overrode what the game was trying to do and went straight hardware config.
other system specs is a gigabyte udp5 (5 video card slots) or whatever that boards name is, dont remember atm, a true quad core 935 or 955 clocked at 3.2ghz, 8gigs ddr3 1800mhz gamer memory, using a 300gig sata hard drive, no not solid state.. and windows 7 64 bit home edition (yes paid for and not cracked) umm.. don't think any thing else will matter so.. oh, the resolution is 1280 X 1024 on a 19 or 21 inch screen, i have great eye sight so it's fine for me...
umm, if you would like, i can take screen shots of my over ride settings for the game for my radeon as i have that sitting in my secondary 16x pci - e slot because it's massive with the cyclone heatsink and fan on it. the slim line 8800 gt is sitting in the primary 16x pci - e slot but is for my movie monitor which i watch netflix on while im gaming on my wifi clearchannel internet... so i don't know what the problems are that you are having but i have smooth sailing, just a tad bit of lag from my ping is all, graphics are great though.
