So has anyone else been trying this out? Basically I have a cent A with the typical ssrm UAC type load out but almost on a whim I threw in a very suboptimal Lr5 rack.

It doesn't do any worthwhile damage but I have found it to be a great informational tool. How.. well after a while you get a rough idea on all maps where folks are likely to go but with ECM lack of scouts on your side etc etc you can't be sure if or how many Mechs are going along that path right?

Nope. Fire a volley from that "useless" LRM5 at one of the regular paths and count the AMS streams that go to swat it down. Instant spotting assist, well not really, but you DO get an idea where the enemy is and how many of them carry AMS and lets be honest AMS is much more popular than it was.

If your on a voice com this info is quickly relayed and was directly responsible for the Ambush and death of an DDC lead Lance going through the tunnel in Forest the other day.

I'm not advocating everyone wasting a missile slot on this use but instead wonder what else can be used to drag some info warfare out of the current system..?

SO what other "creative" uses have folks found for weapon systems?

Also, because lights tend to not use AMS, you can also get an idea of a possibly isolated heavier mech. I have a Stalker with 5 lrm 5s and 2700 rounds of ammo. In chain fire I can get the enemy to use a LOT of AMS ammo trying to shoot down 5 missiles. My highest damage with this build was 1161 with 7 kills.

Stop revealing my tactical secrets! ;) LOL
I use the same tactic which is really helpful at times, especially when ECM is involved. It should be noted that Artemis is required if you want to fire LRMs "blind".

As for other tactics; if I remember correctly Arty and Air strike also turn your crosshairs red if something is hit. While not as pinpoint as counting AMS streams in theory it would turn up enemies without AMS (if hit).

With one LRM5 you can also suppress snipers and other LRM mechs who don't realize that you're not exactly throwing a rain of death at them. If they're smart, they'll realize it pretty fast, but you'll fool them for the first couple of volleys usually.

Good point about dragging some use from the otherwise laughable Arty Module but not sure what you mean about needing artemis. I haven't got it and I get by just fine..? Can you elaborate?

I remember reading that if you have Artemis you can fire missiles at a spot without having a lock and that you could not without it, but I could be wrong. Have to find my source again.

Ok, sorry, my info on the LRM lock is outdated. They removed that in Jan 2013. LOL

No need for Artemis IV. If you don't have a lock you can just fire away, LRMs will fly towards the point where your crosshair was and will make a sharp turn just a few meters above ground, flying away in the direction you've pointed. Useful when there is ECM involved and you cant get a lock on that pesky atlas 200m away thats shooting at you.

I knew there was a reason why I have no AMS on my DDC.

The LRM5-as-suppression is really fun if you also have a really big LRM boat on your team. Just lock on and fire on whatever shows itself, and they'll never know if what's coming is a light drizzle or the Hammer of Thor.

There are a couple of things I really like about using the lrm 5s. If the enemy in in the open, I can keep up a constant fire, which means that he has a continual barrage of explosions and cockpit shake, and the potential visibility problems. Also, it becomes very annoying and frustrating, so there's the whole psychological component. Additionally, the lrms in chain mean minimal heat buildup, if any. The last thing is that I can fire a single volley of 5 missiles at range and by watching my reticle, I can determine whether I will be hitting him with the rain, or whether I should look for another target.

Artemis only effects missiles with lock, so, no it doesn't effect dumb-fired lrms. I used to have artemis on my stalker but dropped in favor of more ammo. There is a slight lag in lock time, but it's not enough for me to put it back.

Figured this one out a loong time ago, but now the 'secret' is out I'll give my modification to it...

You know those NARC tubes? That only shoot one missile at a time? They're great for LRM as tracer fire/AMS spotting. Slot an LRM 5 in there and you can shoot them in a "fan" pattern, covering a wider area than a single volley would. The psychological effect is also more pronounced, as the "Incoming Missiles" notice will last longer and if the enemy lacks AMS the constant splash of (single) missiles can be disorienting.

For an added bonus, use the LRM5 in conjunction with larger launchers. Once the enemy has discovered you're single-firing 5 LRMs at a time and walks into the open figuring you're not a threat, toss in another 20 or 40 ;)

The downside of NARC tubed LRM5's is the damage and cooldown speed are lower, but if you're trying to do damage with a single LRM 5 you're not going to get a lot anyhow.

I ran an LRM5 in my Commando-1B for a while, and used it in about that manner.

I was not as helpful in out and out fighting as I could have been, but I actually got compliments on how I used it :)
Unless of course they were being sarcastic... :)

As others have stated LRM's can be fired blind, either in the air, or at a point on the ground you can aim at. Chain firing LRMs into a cave's mouth is a great way to drive back the enemy.

And the AIMS trick is a good one. Most people have been asking for an AMS toggle switch because they don't want to waste ammo. I've wanted one so it wouldn't give my position away.
