Now I don't hate assault, but I'm not a hug fan of how it's implemented currently. I would agree with Kazairl that assault as it stands feels rather contrived, defending some nondescript drill-thingy.
King of the Hill makes more sense as a scenario, or having attackers and defenders being the point of assault. I would like just a straight team deathmatch mode, though the last mech shutting down is a way to abuse that game mode and waste everyone's time.
I have been giving assault a bit of thought though, on how it could be made more interesting. This is what I've come with so far:
The 'bases' the teams are defending are dropships. These dropships perform a couple functions. They can rearm mechs, and do minor repairs (repair weapons in damaged torso sections for instance. They cannot replace armour or sections that have been destroyed) and they serve as an escape point for mechs too damaged to continue to fight, so player can leave the match without having to suicide or something (and denying the enemy a kill).
The dropships can be destroyed, and that means game over (and kills anyone who had left the match by getting in the dropship). But they'll have a decent amount of HP and some defensive weapons, so some punk in an ECM Spider can't sneak past and just destroy the base.
Another thing I thought of would be if a team goes below some threshold, say 25% of the total HP present, a retreat order is given and they have a certain amount of time to break contact and get back to the dropship before it leaves and strands them there, ending the game.
