Then playing heavy or assault mech will be much easier because of no up keep needed.

How does this fair compare to playing lighter mechs ?

Light mechs will come into their own after Community Warfare hits. Right now games are basically Team Deathmatch, and heavier mechs have a minor advantage (all else being equal). In CW, capping (and other non-damage mission objectives) will matter a lot more, and Lights will be better at it.

Also, there will be tonnage limits that will make heavy mechs less viable than they are now.

It sounds interesting, but I have seen few of this kind of game mode only take place in short period time of the day.

If that is the case, late night players like me is likely not be able to join at all.

Look at the answers for the "Ask the DEVs" section of the forums. A lot of detailed info is in there and will answer some of your questions. A lot of the Ask The DEVs threads have touched on CW details. Thats where I got my info from.

CW has changed since it's inception in 2011, but not dramatically. It is intended to be an ongoing campaign where teams are decided according to who you are loyal to. And the teams will change in different situations (there might be one map with a scenario where Liao and Davion are enemies, and another map where they are allies for example). The goals will be more than just kills/damage, because Loyalty Points will enter the equation, and provide an incentive to do something besides just kill stuff.

EDIT: In a recent podcast they give details on new play modes and community warfare as well. Go to this link - http://www.nogutsnog...opic,930.0.html - It is in the last 1/4 or 1/3 of that show.
