What if there was a damage limit where the mech would instantly overheat and shut down perhaps even cause internal damage. Let say anything over 30 damage fired alpha (not done to the mech being shot at) shuts your mech down and depending on how high the alpha strike is cause some damage internal. This would bring down the amount of high damage alpha strikes we currently see now, and eliminate the current ghost heat settings. The value I used is a variable that can be changed say per tonnage ect...... so good bad lets hear some ideas on this.
Idea On How To Limit High Alphas

I prefer ghost heat.
It's less restrictive and can be avoided with most builds.
I don't like hard caps.
It may not be a bad way to limit alphas, but I don't think building mechs around hard alpha limits is ideal.
Too severe of a penalty for crossing an arbitrary line.

I guess mostly I don't think we need it. A 4p has a 45 point alpha, but isn't dominating th game.

Alpha strikes are not a problem, IMHO and they shouldn't be restricted in any way.
edit; was a bit hostile there
