To spruce up tactical play, I'm going to suggest either expanding assault or adding a new 'tactical assault' game mode. This expansion or addition would revolve around 2 new locations on maps: A repair bay and an artillery replacement. It would also replacement the current 'point capture' victory condition with a static dropship emplacement that needs destroyed.
The Repair Bay cannot be 'claimed' by a side, but a mech powered down in it would have it's armor repaired at a set rate. It would not repair weapons or critical structures, just armor. For obvious reasons claiming this map location would allow a team a advantage in a pitched fight though not an overwhelming one. It should be fairly centrally located, but on one side of a map. It should take around a minute to repair a 30-60 points of armor (exact rate will require testing). So a damaged light can repair in less time than an assault.
The Artillery Emplacement can be 'captured' and when captured mechs attacking the enemies dropship would deal increased damage from server controlled artillery strikes. Like the Repair Bay this should be centrally located but off to one side of the map opposite the Repair Bay.
The drop ship is the key, it replaces the 'stand in the spot' mechanic with an actual target to be destroyed. These are the only objectives where two of it exist on a map. Protecting your dropship while attacking the enemies dropship should be the primary objective. Winning should be either by destruction of all enemy mechs or the destruction of the enemies dropship.
The Repair Bay and Artillery Emplacement are not required to win, but give enough of an advantage their should be fights over them.
Pros to this game mode:
* Reduces the 'death ball' clumping of mechs with several bonuses and objectives to fight over.
* Should increase tactic play in general
* Gives increased roles to lights and mediums (They can reinforce and capture objectives quicker while the heavies and assaults can work more on offense and defense)
* Finally allows armor repair in a match extending the playtime of mechs invovled in early fights
Cons:
* Matches will likely take longer (Not a con to everyone, but unless the rewards are high this could be a factor)
* Requires new game resources and code to implement (Artillery would reuse capture mechanic)
They have said they were working on turrets for their new grand battle type of game mode, so some of the resources for that like destructible objects should work to reduce how long this would take.
So thoughts?
