Well, my friend just started MWO at my suggestion and I was talking to him about what mechs he was interested in, and he said mediums and assaults. Any advice on what assault mech to point him towards? Specifically, he is interested in having a mech more support oriented but not completely toast up close.
Thanks

Highlanders are good all around mechs for the assault class.
If he is willing to splurge the battlemaster is another goodone.
I have had sucess with victors but they are expensive(C-bills) to get started with and are a bit more specialized

Id suggest the Victor for new players, its fast (for an Assault mech) has mobility through jump jets and still can carry a considerable punch.

I would start him off with a medium or heavy to be honest, especially if he's in a support role. Assault mechs are tough to handle, especially if you're standing in the back and get swarmed by lights. If you get killed early then you probably just tanked the entire match since your team is down an assault mech (instead of a medium).
I played around with different mechs in closed beta, but once open beta started I began with the founder's catapult.

as an all rounder the highlander wins for sure. If you fire support use the stalker, especially lrms if thats his style. for heavy brawling use the altas, but you need to have patience to play an atlas.Last of all for fast mobile fire support, use the victor or the battlemasters. His choice of assualt depends on play style and weapon load out he wants to bring

From your description I would advise the Highlander for the assault class. Highlanders are very flexible with their loadouts - you can customize them from close-range over allround to pure support builds (e.g. AC20/SRMs or 2xU/AC5/LRM/SRM or Gauss/LRMs/Lasers). The best variant is probably the 733C. The Highlander will be a cheaper buy than the Victor overall as well, because you don't necessarily need to make the investment of a big XL engine (although you can, if you wish). I would stay away from the Atlas, as this guy isn't playing the support role good at all. Victors aren't the best support mechs either, but they are quite friendly to play. The only downside on the highlander will be, that he is a slow mech, but if he wishes the assault class this is inevitable to some degree.

Mediums are a hard place to start. I say this having over 900 matches in Trebuchet's. (And piloted Hunchies and Cents.) I played many roles in them. Direct support. lrm support, light hunting, flanker etc. They die so easy but if you start there it will make you good, and Cent zombie mode is zombie. They will make you be aware of whats going on or die.
I have good luck with the Quickdraws. They have a bad rep I guess for most. Allround good heavy for me.
Phracts is where I started. Good starter. No missile slots but 2x? has 2 in arms. Many say Hunchies are a good starter.
Just mastered Victors. Very nice starter for an assault I bet. Rather expensive though.
Like qwuacky said desired loadout/style dictates the choice.
edit: Dragon=do not do it. Too specialized.
Have to agree with SS below. Stalker for an assault.

Probably a Stalker then. They are tough and have good hardpoint configs for boating missiles and lasers.
