Why? Because aim is independant of movement the precision and speed advantage of a mouse over the joystick makes the joystick plain and simple a useless input method.

Most joysticks have rotational control as well as the usual l/r/u/d. Easy enough to make rotation turning and the rest aiming. Still independent of each other and turning will be smoother as you can adjust the radius on a turn and keep it more accurately. Much like playing a racing sim with a d-pad vs analog sticks.

Snap aiming would be less responsive simply based on physics between the two.

Its preference. Certainly not useless.

Joystick for movement and throttle and mouse for torso and fine aim is the best of both worlds. Add pedals and you're doing even better
