this is my AS7-D build that i tend to have the most luck with. i went with the LRMs cause i like to be able to have some range game till i close in, or to be able to lend some fire support to teammates while my Fatlas waddles into position :)
i ran out of space so even after maxing my Armor i was still only 99.7 tons lol

Not a bad build by any means, though for personal preference I wouldn't really recommend using the Atlas as an LRM carrier. Your build also runs a bit hot - again personal preference but I think I'd drop the 2 x ML in the centre torso but consider upgrading the arm lasers to ER-LL's.

I have 6 Atlas. I run 2 of them with XL. I chose carefully with my BH...I watched how many times the speed of the 400 XL saved my life VS how many times the XL was my cause of death, had I not had it, would I have lived long enough to still be useful.

I came to about 50/50 after carefully watching and logging about 20 matches.

So, out of my 6 Atlas, the BH (400XL) and one of my S(L) (350XL) have XLs, and are wicked fun.
I have done 1254 DMG one time in my BH, and 1164 in the S(L)

This was a decent thread - but it's very far out of date at present. Most of the advice is still good, but I'd recommend looking up a more accurate guide before making a decision.

I like my Atlases, but don't have any Awesomes. You might try making a post asking for opinions and pros/cons of each chassis.

Sadly very true. I need to heavily update the original post at some point to take in to account all the changes that have happened over the past 2 years. Sadly I don't think that the Atlas is currently competitive compared to other assault mechs and deserves some very specific quirking, but that's probably a subject for a whole new thread...

The DDC is worthwhile and still packs a punch, it is also one of few mechs that can punch a whale in the face. The S is good if you can be supported and brawl but honestly I think the atlas has been superseded by the crab for most things. The crab can bring better weapon load outs to the game but lacks ECM. They cost about the same as well.

Awesome have never been awesome, I have loved mine dearly but they are a bit special needs and I mostly keep them for sentimental value.

If I was buying my first assault mech today I would probably get a complement of banshees unless I had lots of Cbills in the bank in which case I'd go for victors or battlemasters (many models call out for a big and expensive XL engine). The crab is an excellent assault when you have a bit of experience but clunky and conspicuous for the newbie

I'd say neither at the moment. Buy a Banshee instead. For a short range brawling assault the Atlas is still the go-to mech and the DDC and S variants are just about the only thing that can easily take on a dakkawhale (a Direwolf with 5 or 6 x UACs) but if you're new to assault mechs the Atlas is incredibly unforgiving. With the coming of the clans warfare has generally increased in range, and the Atlas is very difficult to use for a long or medium range 'poking' game. If you're with a team who will escort you in to brawling range (<300 metres) then the Atlas can still reign supreme, but this can't be counted on in a PuG making the Atlas a difficult proposition at the moment.

As has since been discussed elsewhere, I think the Atlas needs a +15% armour buff on the torso sections and arms to compensate for it's severe lack of hard points given it's weight. But, that's another discussion...

So what do I do with the AS7- S?? Got this from PGI when I have never used the Atlas before. Then decided after years of playing to try it out. Thought ...hey might as use those LRMs on this since it's got 4 missle points...then proceeded to A) Fight on HPG with everyone under the dish and no one to shoot...pug game..78 damage total since I got there so late and am slow. B ) Played with my group m8s and cause of my speed got left behind on Crimson Strait near the saddle after we crested. One brave soul tried to stay with me and told others but they ignored him. We both got obliterated as the enemy followed over the saddle rear flank and had ECM...I couldn't LRM or shoot them with my Mediums..I was a sitting duck Atlas...I did 4 damage. After that. I think I will go brawl version and upgrade the engine some to at least get 50+kph cause that speed thing is leaving me to get jumped to much by enemies flanking or following me.

In my opinion, the -S is everything the Atlas always should have been. Load it up the obvious way - AC/20, 4xSRM-6, 4xML. Wreck faces, alldayeveryday. We finally have a non-ECM Atlas that can carry more reliable firepower than the one ECM Atlas. I've always thought the -DDC had too much firepower compared to the other variants. It should have only had two missile hardpoints, not three. As is, it outclassed all the other Atlas' - until the -S arrived :)

Don't LRM in an Atlas. Well, maybe in the -K or the Boar's Head. But never in a -DDC or -S. Just load up dem SURMS. Twist, blast, twist, blast.

Sounds good but with it's slow speed how do I get close enough to brawl it out? But I will do what you said since nothing worked well with the LRM version. I'm a guy who likes speed and options and this mech is on a whole different level. Luckily I'm a good AC20 guy since i do best in a Yen Lo...unfortunately Atlas AC20 is torso mounted but will make it work. Thanks for the input.

Love my new -S variant. Load out is: AC20, 4- SRM4's, 2- LPL, 2- MPL with a 300 engine. Your Alpha in this thing is 88... yeah, that's right, 88. Atlas is still the King, but needs to be used as the FINAL nail in the coffin, rather than the constant hammer that Heavy mechs can be.

As for LRMs, my friend from unit uses them on atlas to soften enemies before going into brawl. It works well in group launch.
On my DDC i prefer the classic ac20 3x srm6+A 2x LL but in close range i only use 270m weaps.

as for the speed, I always put a std350 in my atlai, they were just too painfully slow otherwise. With the 350, they'll do 64kph from memory. You also get faster twist speed, which helps when things try and circle you.

I don't have the S, would love to try it, but my DDC has been benched for months, and I've sold the other variants. Atlai (not sure about the S) simply don't have enough firepower in the current state of the game. It used to be my favourite mech, with a 3:1 kill/death ratio, but it's been WAY left behind by the newer mechs. Especially since EVERY SINGLE player in the game knows to target the right torso first, taking out a huge chunk of your firepower.

The Atlas is much like the clan gargoyle in that the mount a few large weapons rather than a bunch of smaller ones (like the Direwolf or Battlemaster). I have the S(L) because PGI gave it to me (along with the Centurion and King Crab) and whiel I don't do great in it.. I have used a 300std with a AC20, 2xERLL, 2xML, LRM20 (mostly because I haven't taken it out as my Griffons and Wolverines have most of my SRMs currently) to decent effect. I don't own any other Atlas versions, so no speed tweak for me.

My best games have been when my slow speed lets me slip behind a enemy group that comes in behind my forces creating a mini-pincer... Most people do eventually turn around when taking LL and AC20 shots to the ass. Usually enough so that my team can push from the other side as a die a flaming constant stream of fire death... xD

Even though it's equally slow I love my KC a lot more and wish I had the other two models to get my speed tweak on... Even so I use it in CW as a 'push the sucker back!' mech.
