Clans are factions in the Battletech universe. If you are willing to know more abouth them you can read on sarna, the BT wiki:
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Clan
or if you don't like to read this is the short version:
In 2781 the Star League collapsed after a coup and General Alexander Kerensly left the Inner Sphere with most of the Star Luague army to make sure it wouldn't fall in the Successor States' hands. After a year of travel they reached the five Pentagon Wordls and, after a bloody civil war, Alexander's son, Nicholas Kerenksy, organized the army survivors in 20 Clans.
They value Honor above all. They are divided in castes and above all there is the warrior caste. A genetic engineering program ensures that new artificially born warriors have the best skills ,being spawned from the DNA of the best warriors of the Clan. They have many traditions and their warfare is organized in "rituals" or "Trials",which is a way to limit civilian casualties. They prefere 1vs1 combat and their honorable combat rules are called "Zellbrigen".
Each Clan has a different view about Zellbrigen and Clan traditions, the Jade Falcons for example are one of the most rigid and conservatives while Clan Wolf is more liberal and less strict about Zell.
The Clans are divided in two political factions: the Crusaders, whose goal is to restore the Star League conquering Terra, and the Wardens , who believe the Kerenskys' words must not be interpretated literally and their goal is to protect the Inner Sphere from both internal and external threats (like the Crusader Clans).
They invade the peripery in 3049 and stomp the coreward part of the Inner Sphere from 3050 to 3052, with a stop in 3051 when their leader, the IlKhan, is killed and they need to elect a new one.

If you go to the sub forums of Ghost Bear, Wolf, Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar, most of the Clan units have recruitment posts.
Wolf is a collective of Clan Wolf units, forming a number of 'clans' within the Clan
Ghost Bear is one unit that a various number of previous incarnations of the Clan have banded together. We are a big 'family'.
Jade Falcons and Smoke Jaguars have individual representations based around either a Cluster or a Galaxy.
Browsing around could give you an idea of who might fit your playstyle.
But then of course you can make it easy and

If you have teamspeak3 you can come on No Guts No Galaxy server and meet some of the Clans on there. They are all towards the bottom. It's a good idea to go talk to people there and see if you meet anyone you like or a Clan that suits your style. Feel free to pm if you have any questions.
