But yes you can sell a Mech after you finish Basic/Elite/Master. The XP never goes away. The Unlocks still work. You can buy it again later if you want.

Xp you have spent on a mech will remain spent, and skills will remain unlocked, so if you're finished all the basic then sell away, just be aware, that you lose a lot of money from selling a mech, so don't do it lightly (you really have to have run out of mechbays before you sell a mech)
Oh and if you intend to exchange xp (using MC) then do it before you sell the chassis because once you sell it its locked out till you buy it again.

Once you have elited 3 of them you will unlock Double (thats 2 X) all of your basic skill further increasing the versatility of your mechs.
Play at least 500 matches in your jaggermechs, you will become much better at them !
Selling mechs is a HUGE C-Bill drain. Unless you can't stand a variant, but then that requires more time to be sure.

The XP stays... if you want you can exchange XP for GXP at the cost of 1MC for 25XP = 25 GXP. If you do not do the exchange BEFORE you sell the Mech it sits there. Until such time as you OWN it again and do decide to do the Exchange.

But if you really really hate em, then just finish basics (since thats the min requirement for elites on your other jagers)

1) Most mech variants still fit the same or similar engines, so having the engine for your build means you'll have the engine for that build in the next variant you buy.
2) Assuming #1, that means you're already a leg up on upgrading your next model, meaning it's more effective sooner, and you can earn more CBills faster.
3) Since you generally want to Elite a mech, XP earned while earning for the engine and mech is usually not wasted. In fact, you can earn up to 43,000 XP after you've completed your basics before the XP (21,500 for the 4 elites, 21,50 for mastery) is no longer useful on that variant.
4) Having a stockpile of engines is nice. Early on I did a lot of engine swapping to save money, and now that I have several engines I can use, I can usually buy a new mech and show the right engine in there while still having a variety of mechs to pilot. This also means it's nice to know what engines are generally useful (XL255, 280, 300, 325/330, and 350/360, Standard 250, 275, 300, 325, and 350), so unless you're getting something a little bit oddball for your particular build (The "I have 2 tons and no space left so let's shove something larger under the hood builds), you can usually make most mech builds work with some of the above engines. So, even if you don't reuse the engine in a different variant, you might end up using it later in a different chassis.
That said, sometimes you just want it done. And if you don't plan on keeping a particular variant, or the engine is an oddball one, moving to a different variant isn't a bad idea.
Biggest reason to NOT buy an engine: The next mech you're buying comes with that engine already. Unless you want them both ready at the same time, and even then, I'd rather buy the mech first.
