Another post in the forums detailed exactly what the problem is. Torso mounted weapons are able to converge unrealistically to the center of the reticule at close ranges. Currently, mechs such as the Jager are able to converge to a pinpoint even with mechs clearly within their physical ability to converge.
In laymans terms, this is how the mechanics should work:
Example one: A Jager with ballistics on both arms fighting a Commando. Because the arms are wide set and physically unable to converge below 90m or so, the mech should be restricted by those angles. In addition, the chest mounted E slots should also be restricted by their own angle, to a minimum range, below which the rounds would need to be fired singly, or else go "around" the target.
The commando would have the advantage at close range (As it should, based on the design and role of the Jager and the commando.) But still needs to fear careful, single shots from the arms, and must deal with the tighter convergence of the chest lasers, which are better suited in an anti-light role.
Example two: A Quickdraw with SSRMs and MLs vs a Commando. Despite being larger and slower, the QKD's wide arm range allows it to easily pinpoint converge at wide angles, based on the physical design and role of the QKD. SSRMs fired from the torso would be locked to a much tighter (But still an easy hit if the target is by the torso reticule.) If the commando is too far from the CT firing angle, the SSRMs miss.
Likewise, the commando's arm mounted weapons are able to converge easily, but they must face their torso SSRMs towards the QKD for them to strike.
This change would give much needed balance and accentuate the differences between the chassis. Jagers would suddenly need to kill targets before they get too close, or have support from allies. Mechs with wide-ranged arms would have an advantage in this regard, but be forced to attack carefully. They can use wide angles or close ranges to outmaneuver horizontally locked weapons, OR bear a greater risk by facing CT towards the enemy in order to fire all weapons, tightening their course of movement and becoming an easier target.

hmmmm.. this really is quite logical. I have a feeling that some players would actually not like this idea, probably just because they want it easy, the gun shoots where the reticle is. As for me, i like your idea.
would definitely better define roles on the the team, and I think would help promote team work; designating jaggers in the back for long range attacks, assaults up front, and lights running around and hitting in the enemy in the back.

yep I've seen this and HATE it. An Altas or jagger at point blank should not be able to shoot my CT with both arms. Also Mechs with lower arm actuators would also have greater range of movement and therefor better convergence. This could also be modified if crits on actuators occur.
I would like to see Torso weps have no convergence (or only smaller one on the logic there is not enough space for weps to swivel internally to the torso) and arms limited to a min range for convergence. This has several major effects
- High alpha builds suchs as dual AC20 jaggers are ineffective or less effective at very short rangers (but have fun getting that close alive)
- All high Alpha builds will have limited pinpoint ability, particular at very short ranges.
- Weapons in the torso while having higer suvivability also have some (additional) disadvantages.
