So I played the game back when it was in its beta phases and still have my account from then, though I didn't play for very long. Now I found the game again by chance and was hoping to find some kind of faction to join and play with, however I cannot post in the faction section. Is there a reason for this?

Keeps the spammers and the anonymous trolls down to size. If you allowed everyone to post you would get a lot of those.
This is actually a very good system, only those serious about the game would get the access to post.

What Moon said, plus they do have access to post, just not unlimited access. Many games don't allow you to post if you don't own the game etc, or restrict you to the Public forums, which are usually ignored by actual players.
