Couple of questions about the mech lab:
  • If I wanted to, for instance, move a weapon from one side of the torso to the other (assuming there is an appropriate hardpoint there), is there a way to do that short of selling the weapon and buying it again to place it someplace else?
  • On Smurfy's mech builder site, it allows me to adjust the amount of armor at each location. Is that possible in the mech lab?
(I keep wanting to type "meth lab" lol)

Thanks.

Seeing as how you have made only two posts I am going to assume that you are still using trials under you cadet bonus? Unfortunately you are not able to do that until you purchase your first mech. I suggest saving all of you cash until you know for sure what you want. Then I would post your build here to get advice. If you have your first mech already just strip the weapon from the mech and put it in an empty hard point if you have the crit space. As far as armor there are four tabs above the weapons clicking the second to last one will let you adjust your armor.

Hope this helps

Here is a play-by-play description on how to adjust armor.

http://mwomercs.com/...djusting-armor/

And any mods have to be on mechs that you own, trial mechs cannot be modified in any way.

Double click on the item you want to dismount and on the item list on the right (appropriate, if you remove a weapon and you're looking at the engines list you have to select the weapon tab or grab it and drop it in the right list.

EG: you remove a gauss rifle (not by selling it!) open the weapons tab and under gauss rifle, you'll see "1" so you own one and you can select another part of the mech (with a ballistic hardpoint), grab that gauss and place it there or by double clicking on the item in the list.

You DO NOT have to sell it to dismount it and then re-buy it! Try to sell less equipment as possible, most of the engines will be helpful with other chassis or variants; there are people I know that have really 2 or 3 XL engines and keep mounting and dismounting them from one mech to another.

You can do the same thing, it's only less straightforward; simply select the section of the mech you wish to adjust the armor and then in the menu to the right select "armor"; once you did this to the right side of the mech section you'll see the amount of armor with two arrows, use the upper one to add armor or the lower one to take some away. Remind that armor on front and rear is shared, so if you see 80 points, you have to allocate like 70 of them on the front and the remaining 10 in the rear.

Legs, cockpit and arms don't have rear/front armor.

1. When you remove a wepon from your 'Mech it is not automatically sold but stored for future use. You can see this by observing the number for QTY (Quantity) increasing from 0 to 1. You can freely use this weapon on any 'Mech.

2. Yes. You can change your armor in the Loadout screen. You find the tab to do so right next to the ammunitions tab.

I'd say it is very bad to make assumptions based on this. No ill intend but for all intends and purposes, this forum is only a secondary part of the game. Sure, it's a beginner's question but I find it inappropriate to tell them that they shouldn't think too hard about it because their post count isn't high enough to be taken seriously.

Never knew about the double click method and all that. I just click and drag the item from one list to another.

I'm actually trying to tweak my first purchased mech. Smurfy has me spoiled. :)

It appears that leg armor cannot be transferred to, say, the torso? That would make sense. It's just something you don't have to worry about in other mech builder sites. I assume this to be the case, because when I click on my center torso, it shows 36/52 and LIMIT REACHED.

It's good to know that I don't have to sell equipment. That stuff is expensive to buy back when you need it. I've already made the mistake of selling my AMS, not realizing I could just stow it, trying to free up some weight for more armor.

Thanks for the help, everyone. It looks like most of the player base are actually veterans of the game. I just happened to see a story someplace recently about the game finally "launching", and thought I'd give it a try.

Each armor location has a maximum amount of armor that can be allocated. 36/52 means there is 36 allocated, but provided you have the tonnage (and the cbills), you could get it up to 52. For torso locations, there is front and back armor. Say you have 80 maximum armor in your center torso. and enough tonnage and armor units to max it. You can distribute that 80 however you like between front and rear CT. Since you'll be facing the enemy more often than not, 60 in the front and 20 in the back makes good sense. Some might prefer 65 in the front and 15 in the back. Or 70 & 10, but that's risky, as more maneuverable mechs might get behind you and chew through your rear armor.

If you go over the armor thread I linked to, it will tell you that each section has a max armor allocation. Plus, you can't increase your armor if your mech is already at max weight, even if you have allocation left.

Your arms and legs armor is wrapped around the entire limb. Your left torso, center torso and right torso are broken out between front and rear sections. However, each one of those has a "max" allocation. You basically break that allocation up between front and rear sections. So, in your case, your center torso has a max allocation of 52, and you have 36 of those points mounted in your front center torso. Which means you have 16 pts of armor mounted in your rear center torso.

You can move that allocation around from front to back, but you can't go over the max over all allocation for that section of your mech.

If you read the armor thread, and look at the screenshots, it should help clear that up a bit better.

Old -- this is totally unrelated but I noticed you went Liao. Congrats! Get your non-Liao mechs now while you still can. Don't get the Cataphracts and Ravens until later unless you already got 'em.

CW's going to make it easier for us to get Liao mechs, but harder to get other mechs.

Kon,

Thanks. I have the Phoenix Overlord package coming in 2 weeks. That should keep me busy for a while. I like one of the Sabre mechs, but not the other, so I doubt I'll do the Sabre add on. Then I heard a rumor that there's another package coming out next spring? Clan mechs? Hate to propagate an unsubstantiated rumor.

Looking through the list of Liao house mechs, it looks like I've accidentally focused on all Liao mechs in my stable up 'til now. Jenners, Cicada (X-5 only), Hunchbacks, Cataphracts, and Stalkers. I think the only non-Liao mechs I'd be interested in would be Jagers, and maybe Spiders. I've been avoiding the Spiders until they fix the hit boxes though. Wanted to see what they play like after (if) they ever get "fixed".

After looking again, I see a variant each of the Spider and Jager listed for Liao. I wonder how strict PGI will be with what is declared "house mechs"? Any variant listed will unlock the entire chassis, or will it be variant by variant?

Armor you don't use sits in a pile, so if you later need it, you can use it.

If you don't have any laying around, the lab will charge you for another ton, and then you have 32 points laying around. If you later take some armor off a different location (before saving), if you didn't need to buy any more, it will remove the purchase. Basically, you set your numbers, and the game will figure out if you moved the same amount around or if you need to buy more.

If you ever sell a mech or refit it with FF, you'll have tons extra laying around eventually, and it's cheep, so cost wise, it's not a huge problem.

It's worth noting that at present, you get just as many C-Bills selling a mech with armor as without. So, if you are going to sell a mech, strip all the armor off it first, which will give you a supply of the stuff.

Kaijin, might it save your armor in your inventory when you sell a mech but don't check to sell items? So no need to strip? I'm just wondering...

I can't wait til they let us sell armor and ammo back. I should be able to pick up a few Cbills that way.

It doesn't strip weapons for you - I don't see why it would strip armor.

Hugely helpful tip about stripping the armor. Thanks!

Kon or Old (or anyone) - what is this "Liao" of which you speak? My questions here have been answered, so I'm all in for a good thread-jacking. ;)

Liao is the tiniest and most rundown of the five great houses of the Inner Sphere.
MWO isnt a stand alone or an in any kind original product of PGI.
Its just the, as sad as it is, pittyfull try to port the Tabletop game Battletech to the Computer.
There were four other titles before MWO. The last was MW4: Vengance with its Addons Black Knight and Mercenaries as well as two official Mech packs and a vast portion of player and fan made Maps, game modes and Battlemechs.
The story and background of the BATTLETECH Universe is vast and even thats an understatement.
There are more than 60 novels and a whole lot of background information rule-, story- and hardware handbooks dedicated to Classic Battletech, Battlespace and Aerotech.
There is more to say much more... but.... there you go.
If you want to know more try the following links:

Armor is automatically stripped off. You can't sell it, even if you don't and sell everything.

If you don't check sell all, it automatically strips everything off (I've tested it). Otherwise, it stripps off the unsellables (ammo and armor).

If you go to the Profile link next to the Logout button you can see all sorts of stats associated with you account. There is a tab for Factions. This allows you to select which House or whether you wish to be a merc or independant that you can belong to. Here on the forums you get a little picture under your name.

On mine you see the purple eagle of Marik, Kon has the upheld sword of Liao, Bront has the blue guantlet for Steiner. There are three other Houses Davion (sword over a sun), Kurita (red dragon on black background), and the FRR (didn't want to mis-spell the name; they have a sort of teal dragon rampant on a shield). There are two other symbols for Lone Wolf and Mercs ( one mech outline or three mechs).

In the upcoming CW (Community Warfare) your faction is going to be really important. Although in the presentation it seems that you can actually work for anyone (and work your way up the ranks), which is sort of confusing. Maybe that will just be mercenaries, after all if you max out all factions you can then join Wolf's Dragoons (famous merc corp in the lore).

The above posts hint at the fact that some mechs will be harder/more expensive to get depending on your faction.

Edit: what is with all the [/color] {Scrap} I keep getting?
