For those of you whom have had to re-install an old pc or laptop with a version of Linux, here some good news.
Just tested and works great
Operating System: Linux Mint 13 Maya KDE 32bit
WineHQ version: 1.6 (Emulation app of windows games for Linux)
Program: MechWarrior 3 ver 1.2.22.0
Patch: MW3Patch.exe http://www.mechwarri...nager.php?id=22

After attempting to install & run Mech Commander 1 & 2, with no success, i manage to install this game without any hitch, no special commands anything.

Had an old image of Mech3 on an iso image, ran the the setup file.
Setup wouldnt run at first, saying MechWarrior 3 only runs in Win95/98SE, so I just went the application config of Wine, added program Setup.exe for Mw3, change Windows version to 98. After choosing a full installation, it installed correctly.
Mechwarrior requires CD, no CD detected...
Open folder of when game is installed usually a hidden folder under wine
Delete Mech3.exe, copy MW3Patch.exe and run. will create new mech3.exe

Run Mech3, High Graphics Campaigns & Instant actions works great.
only drawback, config keyboard, havent been able to customise it like MWO wont allow change.
Oh well
Negative: Quit, locks up game. Terminate. Screen resolution in 640x860, have to re-adjust res to how you previous had it.
Considering the only negative, I say 9/10. Also
http://appdb.winehq....ersion&iId=4549
has a list of games which work and dont work under Wine. My next attempt is Pirates Moon :D
Wish me luck

I wonder if this would be a way to make MW3 work on my PC again. But I suspect my graphics problem would not improve...

Versions of Linux get the latest drivers for most hardware devices. Originally had Win7, Mech3 wouldnt work.Tried Ubuntu LTS 12.04, and version of wine. Had also hardware issue. then re-installed OS Mint, not as powerful but great for those old games sitting in the box collecting dust.

Have you tried changing the default resolution in the gamefiles?

There is no config file to edit and the game itself alternate between 800x600 to whatever you choose. But due to the lock screen when you choose when you are in the menu 800x600 it keeps the linux screen at 800x600 upon terminating the game. But it is the only negative thing about it, meaning it isnt really an issue. Considering, the will on someone wanting to play the game on an old PC or on Linux :D

I have a stack of old P4 machines I'm surplussing out. Maybe I'll hang on to one and load my old copy of Win98 on it for some old school Mechwarrior goodness :D

Tested & worked Pirates Moon
Operating System: Linux Mint 13 Maya KDE 32bit
WineHQ version: 1.6 (Emulation app of windows games for Linux)
Program: MechWarrior 3 Pirates Moon ver 1.0.11.5
Installed same way. On installation it requires CD of MW3 then MW3PM, then after installation copied across a nocd exe file.
PERFECT. and when it exits, it doesnt change the screen resolution. SWEEEET. Anyone who has a old PC or laptop (ie more than 3 years old) and wants good operating system. Install Ubuntu or Mint and use Wine :) ...
Next attempt MW4 +

MW4, at least from what I remember, has already been found to work on Linux under Wine.

EDIT: Found what made me remember: http://www.mektek.ne...-howto/?hl=wine
There are some issues when using it, however, and multiplayer doesn't work...
If you can find a way around this, that would be very nice.
