I can't pinpoint when this happened but at some point my ability to cycle through different weapon groups changed.
It used to be that I could set up to 6 weapon groups and whichever group I had highlighted would fire on left mouse click while the 2 weapon group would always fire off the right mouse click.
Now weapon group 1 is always left click and weapon group 2 is always right click. Additional weapon groups can be set to keyboard options but that's it.
Am I missing something completely obvious here?

A few patches ago the default 'mouse 1 fires selected group' was re-mapped to 'mouse 1 fires group 1' because new players were being confused.
Go to your key bindings and change the binding, since a subsequent patch added 'fire selected group' as a bindable option.

Exactly.
As a side note, if you play a lot, it is worth investing in a mouse with multiple buttons. Having at least 4 weapon groups on your mouse is pretty ideal.

Big +1. I did this and am very happy I did. For thumb-fire buttons, just remember: squeeze, don't punch or your aim will wander ( much like a real firearm)
