[This isn't relative to the current patch, but I didn't see a more appropriate forum for it. Please move if appropriate.]
IMO there just isn't enough difference between various versions of the same mech chassis to require getting all basics on three of them to progress. Personally, I love the game, and I'm excited to try all the various chassis at some point. However, once I play one Catapult, a second one is going to be near the bottom of the list of mechs I want to play next. Instead, I'm going to want to move on to another chassis (maybe even a different weight class), spending a lot of time on the ones I enjoy most. Instead, I have to max out a laser boat, missile boat and hybrid build in every chassis (not exactly the same for each chassis, but you get my point) of a given weight class, when each loadout type provides a similar gameplay experience and promotes a particular style of play to multiple other models in the same class (sometimes even in the same chassis).
It makes sense on paper, I guess - if you want to be considered a master in a particular weight class, you should achieve elite in each of the chassis in that class, but requiring the player to purchase and grind *three* models of *every* chassis in a given weight class is a bit much.
Perhaps, instead, a list of achievements that must be met on each chassis. That way, if you can accomplish them all on one model, then good for you, but you may have to buy a second (or in worst case scenario, that third one) to give you the loadout you need to do so. Those achievements could be anything from "X-kills by LRM" to "Y-damage inside/outside of Z-meters" or bounty achievements like killing a certain number of mechs of a given faction. I could play the mechs I like best, and before I know it, many of the achievements could be completed in the course of normal play, leaving only a few I need to make a concerted effort to finish. I'm not forced to purchase and play numerous mechs in which I have little interest in the first place or that simply offer a redundant game play experience.
I realize that at its core it's a grinding system, and that is a necessary evil. I just think it could be disguised a lot better. It doesn't have to *feel* so much like grinding.
I also realize that the current system provides a certain amount of incentive for players to buy heroics, and I can't completely fault you for that, either. It's a FTP game and you folks have to make your bones someplace. Perhaps, instead, you could offer additional consumables that make some of those achievements easier to complete without wrecking game balance (I know, I know that can be a really fine line).
Elite efficiencies are a great idea. I just really don't care for the design of the current implementation.
