Unlucky chap.. yes it was you personally :) But props for trying to be decent about it.
I try an apologies in game chat if I notice fast enough myself. But as others have said it happens try not to do it again but if a light wants to commit suicide by leaping in front of you don't sweat it either.

I remember once a long time ago I had a dragon with an ERPPC on one arm and a gauss in the other, well we were on forest colony and had just come out of the cave almost the entire team, when a catapult (I think) came over the hill. Everyone took a shot, and, well the dragon shoots about 300m to either side because I got a TK with the gauss (this was long before the charge mechanic) and killed the enemy 'mech with the PPC. Thing is that I was fully zoomed in and the other 'mech wasn't even on screen when I killed him. I was shocked then, I am amused by it now.

Note that even when random (insert colourful metaphor here)s on my team try to pick a fight I usually leg or disarm them

Hey Man don't sweat it...9 times out of 10 its the majority team herd thinking they have to wash the enemies windshields in order to kill them, instead of shooting from position. Thus shielding the enemy Battlemech with theirs and incurring the teams FF intended for it as well. In what can only be defined as Pure 100% Dwankie tactics! :)

Someone just team killed me ten seconds into the match. I wont mention his name but I called him out right away. He apologized saying he was setting his weapons and hit the alpha strike into my back. Other teammates offered to kill him for me.

POINT IS... don't be one of the idiots test firing straight ahead at the beginning of a round. Please shoot in the sky or the ground right in front of you.

pro tip: check your fire when friendlies are in the cross.

they need to re-add the death penalties and tk penalties. this isnt call of duty, its mechewarrior.
Here's another pro-tip, to prevent a TK on yourself... cross behind, rather than in front of, friendlies who are firing, already. Crossing in front of them is just patently stupid.

Yet another pro-tip... set your damn weapon groups in the Training Grounds, not in a match. I realize people forget, but they really need to pull their heads out of their butts and make sure they're set before they drop in-game.

Any game with friendly fire is bound to have team kills from time to time. Most of them are inevitable. Nobody can keep track of everything around them at all times and when you're in the heat of battle the world sometimes is reduced to you and what you are shooting at.

I try to be aware of my surroundings and if I see someone firing at another I do my best to stay out of the line. Once in a while I'll need to get through there and there won't be a safe path or perhaps there won't be time to go around. In those situations I try and time it between their shots but I risk it accepting that if I die it's my own fault for doing so.

I do have a few TKs....mostly lights weaving in front of me when I'm firing off my AC20. When I'm zoomed in it's difficult to predict such a thing.

Pro tip, if your friendlies are already firing, do not cross into the path of their weapons.

I was circling an atlas for a good 10 ++sec when my team mates decided they want to get in on the action and ended up legging me

I once accidentally killed a lance mate with my Streaks. That took some doing.

Here's another pro-tip... when you enter a match and haven't set your weapons before-hand, and you decide to do so then and there, because it really doesn't take much, DO NOT FIRE INTO THE AIR TO TEST THEM!!! Talk about giving away your position... sheesh.

I had a team-kill one time. River City Night, I'm coming off the Citadel side of the middle bridge and one of my team mates was in the water being circles by three or four Lights. I dropped one of the lights, but in the process of hitting a second one, I accidentally drove a medium laser right into the Center Torso -the right arm and torso were gone by this time- and ended my own guy. I dropped the second Light, as it had been hammered pretty bad, but then a couple of enemy 'Mechs waded in to help their third Light buddy finish me off. It was a glorious death, but to this day that's the only TK I've ever had out of 2,011 drops.

I thought, perhaps, I had a second TK, right after the stat archive, but it never counted me for one. I think it was a Wolverine, similar situation, except he only had one light on him, I saw the red inverted full triangle and came around the corner. The Wolverine was so beat up that a single Medium Laser finished off its back armor. I think the Light, however, and the incoming LRMs, got it right before I did, and the Wolverine did not count as a TK. I finished the leg on the Light -I was NOT aiming for the leg, for the record- and then pummeled it so it could no longer spot or fire on anyone. Unfortunately, a 'Mech came up behind me -I don't remember what kind it was, or if I even identified it- and cored me out from behind immediately after that.
